At the recommendation of a local, last evening we ventured to a restraunt called "The Yearling", where they serve local "Cracker Cuisine". In addition to the unique food we enjoyed a live Blues singer called Willy Green. The restaurant was named after a book written be a local lady called Marjorie Rawlings, she won a Pulitzer prize and a movie was also made, Jo seems to remember reading the book when she was younger, as for me, well you know I only went along for the weird food.
We started dinner with a handle of Samuel Adams ale, and then as the waitress served an adjoining table, both Jo and I unanimously agreed that the meals were way to large for us and we should order from the appetisers menu. First up was a platter of deep fried Alligator, fried green tomatoes, frog legs, and fried Portobello mushroom. Then came the black eyed peas, cheese grits and collared greens, and last but not least was the conch fritters and hushpuppies.
Much of the food was deep fried, and to be honest we enjoyed the alligator, and mushrooms, the frogs legs were large and tender, but the texture didn't appeal.
The waitress who helped us order agreed that the portion sizes were very large and she laughed how some folks ordered an appetiser than moved onto a main course, but asked for a diet coke.
