Sometimes people suprise you.
Pauds and myself arrived in Rosario not knowing what to expect and we decided to cold call a hostel and take our chances. I went up to the information desk for the town but I have little spanish and the girl at the desk had even less english. We did agree that it was a great day though and that everything was good. Todos es bien in Spanish. So I played charades with her for forty minutes and in the end the answer was Little house on the prarie with Michael Landon and she recommended a hostel by the river Parana. Grand says I and off we trecked. She also said that it would take 30 minutes walking but an hour later we were nowhere near there and we jumped into a taxi and 5 pesos later we were dropped off at a Yacht club.
We went into the club and the guard at the gate was quite the bewildered and he called backup. Out came two lads our age and we had a good chat about the girl at the reception and how she hadn´t a clue. It turns out that there is no hostel there and that they were on the list to accommodate teams of sailors from other parts of Argentina. Pure stones says we but then the suprise came. Out came Zombie aka Augistin and he insisted that we stay on his boat for the night. Couldn´t be happier we were and off we went with our new best friends from Rosario. We got onto the boat and we started to learn about the lads. Really all they do is sit around and do as little as possible. As Hato says "We live like kings but without the responsibility" and he is dead right but I think Hato lives like a dog such is the amount of skirt chasing that he does.
The lads organised a barbeque for us that night and invited all of their friends. What a grill it turned out to be. As many meats as you can name and a few more besides. I had never had cows intestines before that day and really I didn´t feel that I had missed anything but I can report that it tastes like rubber and pate. Whatever you are into. So we retired to the boat and went to sleep at 3 or 4 after learning all about Argentina and swopping emails so that the lads can come to Ireland. There was an electric storm that night but I didn´t feel anything on the boat despite the lashing that it took.
The next day we went on a tour of Rosario. Quite a nice town after all and if you are ever in the region you should check it out. The lads were like any person who lives in a city in that they had never gone to any of the places on their own and they were happy out to go along with us. There is a monument there that commerorates the foundation of Argentina and inside there are flags from all the "friends" of Argentina. Unfortunately Ireland´s flag is not there. I don´t know if the two countries fell out but we did our best to repair relations. But Pauds and myself outdid ourselves singing the Italian and the US national anthem there. We were nearly thrown out of the museum after singing the Italian one but sin e. It came time to leave and take a 18 hour bus ride to Salta and even though we were not even a day there it was hard to leave. I will definately return. The lads are professional sailors and snowboarders so if you ever want a teacher for either sport let me know and I´ll sort you out.
