As the last two surviving members of the Friday night Pav crew, the others being as they are in South America, North America and England at the moment, Paudie and myself decided to go out with a bang. So what better than the mythical Baggot Mile to send us off?
The night started off with an agonizing bus ride through late evening city traffic. The crowds leaving Croke Park added to the volume and as we made our way on the painfully slow greenhouse of a bus the thirst was building up
Henry Grattans was next on the list, followed by Larry Murphys and Maguires. I don't think Maguires have ever had as many people in the pub and the barman looked a little shocked when 35 people walked through his door. From there we went to Toners and the pace began to slacken. Jules, who had arrived late, was fitting extra pubs in around those on the list and he was spotted in Doheny and Nesbitts horsing a pint like it was his last.
At this stage the gang began to get sidetracked and envoys were sent to The Dawson Lounge, O'Donoghues, The Shelbourne and Bruxelles for the 11th pint of the night. A black tie wedding was crashed, a fire exit used to get into a pub and a brush with the law were some of the highlights on the eleventh.
We had agreed to meet up in Down Under for the 12th earlier that evening, so everyone eventually made their way to the club and the final pub in the Baggot Mile was claimed. At the end of the night only one question remained to be asked.
"Was it as good as you expected?",
