To save time we flew down from Mendoza, since life is far too short to spend like 45 hours on a bus....
It all started with landing right on the lake.... Great view and that is when we really got excited and also started add a few extra layers after looking out the window.
First off we arrived at our hostel and I had a smile across my dial as soon as we got dropped off, a combi out front 5 dogs on the porch... I had a great feeling about this place of course
Day 1 had to be the wonder of the world the Glacier Perito Moreno.... And even though I am a kiwi I havenīt actually ever seen a decent glacier so this one blew my mind and mumīs too ( and she has out little kiwi ones jaja) OH MY GOD bloody freezing but that did not phase me at all, YOU MUST SEE this massive chunk of Ice i you ever get the chance and I highly recommend trekking on it as well if you have never ice trekked as you see a different side to the glacier, sin holes and all and while it is most spectacular from the balconies or a boat standing on it is pretty bloody awesome as well. We went with Heilo y Aventura and while a little pricey it was great you did everything the guides were great so worth every penny. We saw some massive shards of ice come of while in the boat as well so got to see why this glacier is considered one of the best in the world and also the most interesting...... Also you would not believe it but just before we left the glacier we were taken to a glacier bar and got whiskey on glacial ice literally, Louise I managed to consume a whole glass too! Think it was the fact I was freezing and man did it warm me up jaja ..
LONG day for us and we were buggered that night so we hit up pizza place in town OVER ordered and took home a doggy bag then literally hit the hay pretty much pronto as soon as we got back to I Keu Ken.
We decided to spend the next day (after a sleep in) to explore El Calafate properly and do a touch of shopping of course, Mum had her markets I thought I was a machine with market shopping but I definitely get it off her! Mum picked up heaps of great purchases and I a couple of little one since the money needs to last A LOT longer for this kiwi..... some how! I did notice the artisan crafts down south a very different and actually very similar to aboriginal art, i liked how different it all was and to see different stuff at the markets compared to everywhere else in sud america was a real treat.
That night I Keu Ken put on a great Asado, mum treated to her second asado but this time of the Patagonia kind...... MUCHO CARNE y SAL! Dad you would love it, the pictures tell the whole story tho I believe. This takes approx 5 hours to cook, the longer the better so my patience was tested jaja I loved the intestine, salty fatty goodness! And mum did too until she knew what it was jaja We all ate together at the hostel, drank mucho vino out of penguin vases, it was a great way to send our last night in El Calafate! Perfection.......
