Entry 3 of 9 | show all | print this entry

Hong Kong was pretty nice. It's kind of a big British Chinatown financial superpower with over 7 million people crammed in to less than 16 sq. miles. And the whole thing is on the side of a hill. Real estate is a hot commodity here, and the airpot is pretty much built on a manmade sandbar.

We got there in the early evening, but jet lag was starting to set in, so we just went out to have one beer before bed. We went to a bar and the bartender offered us his 'house beer' on tap- from Brooklyn Brewery. No thanks, I just flew 17 hours away from there. So we tried some Chinese beer and went to bed.

One neat thing here is this huge escalator system (a few miles long) that takes everybody downhill in the morning to the financial district. Kind of fun to watch, if you're not going to work. We had fun on the escalator watching all of the people with jobs going to work. The whole thing goes in one direction- down, in the morning, then switches direction, at 10am. So we did that in the morning, then waited for 10am to come around and took the escalator back up to our hotel. (There wasno way Jim was going to walk 3 miles up the stairs.) The financial district is pretty interesting, and the Bank of China has the best building in town.

Then we headed over to Kowloon, across the harbor. There's less scyscrapers and more shopping on that side. You can buy a fake anything you want, or you can just find a place to have dim sum before you head to the airport (which is what we did).

The airport-on-a-sandbar is very well organised, but also HUGE. You can take the 'airport express' train, where you can check in and check your bags with your airline right at the train station, then jump on the train to the airport. That's was the easy part.

Once you get to the airport, you have to get to your gate. You'll have to walk a few miles, then take a moving sidewalk to the tram, ride the tram to another wing, walk a few more miles, get on a bus, and then you're at the international terminal gate #1. We needed gate #82...
