We left Sanur on yesterday and hired a van to drive us to Ubud (recently made popular by the book "Eat, Pray, Love"), about one hour inland. We are a bit higher in elevation but it is still very warm here and very lush. We booked a hotel a short ways out of the hustle of Ubud. It is a peaceful garden oasis. More romantic than family oriented but we got a beautiful room right beside the swimming pool with a huge veranda and comfy chairs for relaxing. However this is

jungle and there are many, MANY insects here. This morning I saw Kevin take a shoe into the bathroom and close the door. This was followed by a lot of smacking, banging and cursing. Eventually he prevailed over the giant eight-legged guest. Scotia is fine with bugs now and likes to watch the ants crawling around. Of course her favourites are the butterflies.

We spent today walking down the main street of Ubud, which is very touristy and lined with shops. At the end of the street is the Monkey Forest where you can pay a couple of dollars for bananas and then go into the forest to see the monkeys. These are not cute, friendly monkeys, they are aggressive, city monkeys and they want your bananas. Kevin had Scotia in the backpack and he was holding the bananas. A monkey came running up and jumped right on Kevin, the monkey's foot holding on to Scotia's leg. Of course she started screaming hysterically. And that is where our monkey adventure began and ended.

Back on the main street, sedated with pink ice cream, Scotia was finally able to discuss the monkey incident and now tells anyone who will listen that a monkey jumped right on her. She has already named a long list of people back home that she will tell about the monkeys.

We spent a bit of time in the main market, where you can buy any and all of the beautiful Balinese handicrafts that you desire. Scotia got two new (pink) dresses.

We have arranged for a car rental, beginning either tomorrow or the following day. This will give us the freedom to see more of Bali in our short time here.

Hi Scotia,

Your mom send me an email about that naughty monkey jumping on you. What a bad thing for that monkey to scare you like that, naughty, naughty monkey!

I am happy that your dad was with you to help and that you got to have pink ice cream to help you feel better.

I miss you and love seeing the photos of you and Cambria that your mom sends.

Have you seen any pink flamingos yet?

I will be happy when you get back and tell me stories of what you saw and did in Bali.

I love you.

p.s. Scotia, did I ever tell you that Auntie Mica's nick name was "Pinkie" because she loved pink when she was a little girl, just like you!

What a fabulous adventure you all are having (bugs & nasty monkeys notwithstanding)! It was a treat to read your blog - first one I've ever read from someone I know. You've brightened my day :-) Keep well and I'm looking forward to the rest of this vicarious trip (for me) away from the blahs of Vancouver weather.

How great to see what you are all up to and to read your latest news! Looks like the girls have adjusted beautifully. LOVE the photos, particularly the one of S and C with flowers in their hair. Your FB update re. "no I don't want to see your shop and no I don't want a taxi", cracked me up! Hope you guys have a blast. Miss you! xo
