The city-scape of Lüneburg is truly something to marvel at. Beautiful brick buildings, flecked with the occasional towering church spires. And the churches are only half as beautiful on the outside as they are on the outside. Inside is every style from mid-evil to renascence to baroque and such history behind every piece.
Another thing Lüneburg has is it's 'Rathaus' or city hall. Inside there are many rooms from the original 1300's rooms to more elaborate ballrooms and court rooms and even a baroque facade.
Lunch was incredibly great. I had a specialty from the area, a certain type of sheep. The area around Lüneburg until recent times, was over-farmed so was a huge desert so to speak. The only thing to grow was the occasional weed that no animal would eat. No animal but this certain sheep. So they have been thriving in this near desert conditions for some while now. This lamb was served with a gravy sauce, potatoes, and green beans. And for dessert, what other than espresso?
After these adventures we took a taxi (a Mercedes of course, it is all they have) to the next town over where the great ship elevator is, the largest in continental Europe. What is a ship elevator you ask? Let's say for example you have a canal going north and another going south. They meet, unfortunately there is a 38 meter (100 some feet) difference. You build a ship elevator! It basically lifts a huge section of the river with a boat in it, 38 vertical feet. Crazy, right?
After, catch a bus back to the DB Train, and then back to Volksdorf, Hamburg. An incredibly fun and interesting day!!!
