America, yes, America. While we Canadians like to look down our noses at those crude belligerent neighbours of ours I have to admit things seem a lot better on this side of the fence. First of all, they have McBiscuits for breakfast at McDonald's. Mmmmm Mmm! Nothing but nothing is better than a steaming hot Sausage McBiscuit with Egg in the morning.
Americans also have this super-cute weather woman on The Weather Channel every night. She's great-looking and she provides useful information. What else could you ask for in a woman? Unfortunately she told me that today would see the worst November storm in the midwest in exactly 23 years - the same day that the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk in Lake Superior. After a hearty McDonald's breakfast nothing could stop me though.
The storm wasn't too bad. I caught the tail end of the thunderstorms first thing but then I had to deal with 90kph winds all the way across Illinois, Iowa, and well into Nebraska. At one point while travelling into the wind I noticed that I was only going about 100kph but I had my foot on the floor! The wind was really affecting my fuel mileage as well. I was only getting about 200km per tank of gas. I felt I had to press onward though as these plains states are hardly full of dramatic geography. Once I crossed the Council Bluffs and into Nebraska the wind died down a bit and I made good time. I stopped for dinner in Kearney, NE at Taco John's. It was another excellent meal for the road. I ordered a chicken fajita (minus tomatoes) and potato oles (kind of like flat tater tots). Although Taco John's has a fast-food set-up they make every order fresh. This pays off as the meal was great. The hot sauce they employ has a nice tang to it. I stopped in Ogallala, NE that night. This meant that I had lived my dream to drive across a time zone in one day. I woke up on Eastern Time and I fell asleep on Mountain Time.
