Before our flight to Bariloche in Patogonia, we wandered around palermo viejo, the hip neighborhood of Buenos Aires and the location of our hotel.
Due to a complicated mix-up, when we arrived at the airport we discovered we didn't have tickets for our flight to Bariloche. As if that wasn't bad enough, the flight was completely sold out, with 8 people on the waiting list. It was the last flight of the day. So lisa tells the ticket agent that we are on our way to see our friend who is in the hospital giving birth - Lisa even pulled off tears. Amazing. They moved us to the front of the list and we made the flight!
After a 2h 10 minute flight we arrived in San Carlos de Bariloche. Bariloche is a fairly large town (100k people, but you would never know it was that big) surrounding an amazing lake and incredible moutains (lake tahoe but much more amazing). The actual center of town is rather touristy and popular with high school kids so we didn't spend any time there. Its more of a jumping off point for skiers, hikers, mountain bikers, fishermen, horseback riding etc.
My longtime family friend Manolo, who recently moved to Bariloche, met us at the airport and we followed him in our rental car to his place about 15 minutes out of bariloche. Manolo set us up with a quaint little cottage in the countryside near the house he is renting.
Manolo and his girlfriend Romina took us out to dinner at a local Argentine favorite
After dinner we crashed at our little hobbit house. Or tried to crash. Bariloche has a LOT of stray mutt dogs who decided to bark for most of the night. Couple that with a flock of wild parrots who seemed to taunt the dogs so sleep was a bit spotty.
