A Saint behind a Castle
Entry 48 of 80 | show all | print this entry |
Western Spain is surprisingly flat, boring, empty, and not very pretty. the train rides to Salamanca and then to Avila have been nothing but endless deserts for landscape like Nevada or the flat bare lands of the Midwest. the center of Avila is surrounded by these huge castle walls and towers that go on for miles, completely surrounding the old part of town. our hostal is right outside the main gate and we have 2 balconies to view the massive stone walls from. when we first got to Avila it was siesta time, everything was closed and no one was out, so we relaxed in our room. around 4:00 P.M. we went inside the castle walls and saw the oldest and first Gothic church in Spain. after that we walked around the outside of the walls, taking in the views of the valleys and hills below, and walked around the town inside the walls. Santa Theresa's church and monastery are here, there is an amazing gold altar dedicated to her. for dinner, we got some salami, some really good Spanish cheese, and bread and had dinner on the terrace just outside the town walls. it was so beautiful and the weather has been a lot warmer since we got to Spain, (not counting the rainy day in San Sebastian) which is always great. After dinner we went back to the hotel and relaxed, it was wonderful.
this morning i woke up and before i could remember where i was i looked outside out balcony and saw the castle walls. interesting sight to wake up to. we head to Madrid today. it will be interesting to see a big city in Spain as opposed to the little ones we have been visiting so far and see the difference.
