York, not New York but the original
Entry 12 of 80 | show all | print this entry |
we started the day with a big breakfast and then took a train from Newcastle to York. the train toilets had really cool big curved sliding doors that was like you were getting into a space station. York is an awesome place! all the main entrances to the center of town have these castle like gates that are really cool. we walked around town which has all these cmall alleyways and small shops that feel very medieval, especially with the cobblestone streets. the old part of town is called the Shambles. we went to York Minster Cathedral which is huge (only Westminster Abbey has been bigger so far). beautifully decorated/designed and the east stained glass window is the largest medieval window in Britain depciting scenes from Genesis and Revelations, the beginning and the end of the wrold. underneath York Minster is a huge crypt called the Undercroft. the Undercroft goes through the story of the Roman fortress that was built where York Minster is now, the Norman church that was built on top of the Roman fortress, and then the current church that was built on top of the Norman one. it's cool because the original Roman street is actually 20 feet or so below the current street level because of all the stacking of foundations over the years. in the Undercroft there is also a treasury of ancient gold and silver artifacts from the Norman and British churches over the years. in the middle of town there was a huge open air market with fresh food and items from around the world. we got some fresh bread, local garlic salami, and garlic gouda cheese and took it back to the hostel and had some amazing sandwhiches. the market was so cool with things from India, South Africa, and the most delicious desserts (Marianne got this really good chocolate and mint fudge). after lunch we went to the York Museum and Gardens. the gardens are beautiful with ancient stone walls from previous Roman and Norman towns and fortresses running through parts of the park. we spent the afternoon playing cards in the park admist ancient stone walls, how cool! we are now back in the hostel doing laundry and we are going to watch Braveheart, hopefully. i've never seen it and after touring Scotland and learning the history behind the movie i really want to see it.
