Climbing The Sugar Loaf

My goal for this particular day was to climb The Sugar Loaf, an impressive hill which overlooks the town of Abergavenny. Information on this and other walks in the area are available at the town's information centre. This was a very pleasant 15 km walk, which I began from the town centre, making my way up through the town's streets and onwards through narrow hedged laneways which meandered their way upwards. The laneways and their quaint homes gave way to the sheep and their grazing fields. As I progressed further the path entered woodlands followed by low heath, traversing the ridge which leads to the Sugar Loaf. The climb itself is not difficult and I was quickly able to reach the summit which offers panoramic views of the town and surrounding countryside with its lush green grazing fields crisscrossed by stone walls and hedges.
On return to the town I was able to take a short visit to the ruins of a 12th century Norman castle with gatehouse. There is also a museum at the site of the castle. After collecting my gear from the hostel I was off to my next stop, the former Roman town of Chester.
