Having now seen London's main sights I was keen to venture out to the English countryside and visit other places so that morning I put my main suitcase into storage and headed off to Waterloo Station by tube which involved changing from the district line to the new Jubilee line. Waterloo Station is easily as big as Sydney's Central Station, though this is not even London's larges station.
I was off to Salisbury which is a quaint English town near Stonehenge. The journey from Waterloo Station was somewhat resemblant of the westbound journey between Central and Strathfield in Sydney; the infrastructure such as bridges, stations and signalling were all similar and the Victorian terraces resembled those situated around the Sydney suburbs of Newtown and Stanmore. We passed a number of stations as we left the city indicating that the corridors are also shared by suburban line services. On passing the last of these stations the train, which consisted of only three cars crept up to full speed and the outer suburbs of London soon gave way to the picturesque English countryside Train to Salisbury

. Again I expect that we were now exceeding the maximum speed of any train from my home state of NSW, in Australia. My plan for the next seven days was to make my way around a few places in England and Wales then cross over to Dublin by ferry where I will join a three day tour of southern Ireland, though my plans for this period were flexible.
The trip from London to Salisbury took only about an hour and a half and on arrival I made my way to the YHA which turned out to be a beautiful old mansion converted to a guesthouse. Whilst preparing my meal I met Youn, a student from German who was touring in this region with his car. This was great as I now had company and transport for the trip to Stonehenge, so naturally it was my shout when we visited one of Salisbury's local establishments to sink a couple of pints.
