I set off from the hostel at Barcelona to make my 11.00 flight. There were three options; the train which runs every half an hour, the bus which is a little more frequent or a taxi which turned out to be the best option as it was a Sunday morning and there was practically no traffic on the roads. The flight to Heathrow was fine, though I soon discovered that I should have booked my flight from London to Edinburgh to depart from Heathrow. I'd booked a flight to depart from Stansted Airport which I soon discovered is almost 2 hours by bus from Heathrow. It would have actually been quicker to take the train to Edinburgh which departs every half an hour from Kings Cross station and reaches Edinburgh in only four hours.
I was taken for a small tour of Edinburgh by night in the airport shuttle bus as it dropped other passengers to various locations around the city. The city is Scotland's second largest after Glasgow and home to around 500,000 people. Edinburgh is beautiful with many historic buildings and most importantly of all it has a castle. I got a quick look at Edinburgh Castle that night and another look the following morning. The building has stood upon Castle Rock in its current form since the 16th Century though other military structures have previously occupied the site since the 9th Century due to the location's strategic elevated advantage.
That night I stayed in SmartCity Hostel which was very neat and spacious. The following day I would set off on a five day tour of Scotland.
