Yesterday was a write-off as we were catching up on sleep...and by the time we got round to doing anything, it had started to rain (lots) and we ended up in a touristy cafe. After my 2 course lunch (elsewhere, $1.50) i left $8.50 here for a cake, coffee and two G&T´s. Ladies and Gents, that´s how travel budgets get demolished. That said, there was absolutely nothing else to do, given the weather, and it was a very pleasant afternoon indeed.

SO...Today I watched the rugger (Ireland vs Wales) with the girls and headed into the old town (colonial, very nice, yawn) and then to Basilical del Voto Nacional. The latter is a very big church/cathedral/whatever that you can literally climb all over. They have installed various exposed ladders and walkways to make the highest reaches of the towers more accessible - but frankly it would give anyone with slight vertigo some issues and western health and safety would have shut it down years ago.

Awesome :-)

Close to Quito is the Equator. There are two sites - the ´original´ monument constructed by the French, several hundred feet off in the wrong direction - and the ´correct´ one, which is more like a mini theme park with science based experiments showing the effects of being in the right place. Monuments are not my thing, especially French ones in the wrong place, so i joined the tourists at the real one site. Surprisingly most of visitors were Ecuadorians. And despite what some people say, the water does drain in different directions either side of the equator...and straight down when you´re on the line!
