San Augustine is one of these places that Lonely Planet hype as a ´must do´ but in reality there really isn´t much to do here. It is renowned for it´s abundance of Pre-Colombian burial relics - basically a load of little (and large) figurines and statues.

On arrival, the tourist information office presented us (´us´ being me, Kate-UK and Mike-CAD), with the two things to do - a jeep tour for 40k and a horse trek for 30k. However, within a few minutes we´d been approached by some lovely local operation that gave us both for 20k on the condition we didn´t tell our fellow (ripped-off) passengers. And that was just fine by me.... :-)

Waterfalls and old statues filled our days, but to be honest, they all looked the same after a few hours. The horse tour was best (even if mine couldn´t gallop - it just trotted quickly!). After doing that, you could basically leave Solento having seen ´everything´, unless of course pre-Colombian artifacts were truly your bag. Maybe i´m a trifle jaded, but it really did all blend together after a while...

Rumor has it that there -is- more to do. Locally, it´s famed for its fields of (magic) mushrooms, "Yajh-HE" (hallucinogenic potion prepared by local Shamans) and coke factories (much like the rest of Colombia). But i´m off tomorrow and it seems like you need to earn the trust of locals before you see the non-LP sights. Next time (seriously), as i figure they´re more the ´real´ Colombia than little statues anyway.

There is no nightlife here, but apparently Fridays are ´naked´night´ when they roll out the strippers. We´ll see - am currently pre-drinking as i write.

updated: Friday´s are dead too.
