Playa del Carmen is a balneario resort city just south of Cancún on the coast of the Caribbean Sea, in the northeast of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. In the 2010 census, the city had a population of 149,923 people and it is rapidly growing in population. It is the third largest city in Quintana Roo, after Cancún and Chetumal.

Playa del Carmen is named for Our Lady of Mount Carmel, who is the patron saint of Cancún. The first recorded visitors to the beaches of what is now Playa del Carmen came during the Early Classic Period (a.d. 300-600) of the Mayan civilization. Then called Xaman-Ha, or "waters of the north," Playa del Carmen was a rest stop of sorts for travelers making their way from the great cities of the Mayan world to the island of Cozumel.

We flew from Miami to Cancun and caught a coach over to Playa Del Carmen. This is a gorgeous little resort with an amazing beach, the softest sand ever and an amazing clear blue sea. The great thing is that unlike Cancun Playa Del Carmen is an unspoilt gem, not many tourists and still retains that authentic Mexican flavor. We spent the first day on the beach and most of the time just lazing about in the clear warm water. We had started to take our anti malaria meds just before we left Miami and a bad side effect is a sensitivity to sunburn. Yes you guessed it after being away for over 4 months we burn´t pretty bad. Rob´s sunburn just looks a deeper red brown but poor Nick just went a deeper shade of pink.

We spent some time in Tulum which is a town outside of Playa Del Carmen. It was ok but quite touristy. We also visited Coba which was far more interesting and had extensive Mayan ruins inside the tropical forest just outside the town. We also saw a couple of crocodiles in the lake which was cool.

Playa del Carmen is gorgeous and we had an awesome chilled time, for that we give Playa del Carmen a great 8.5/10.
