Playa del Carmen is named for Our Lady of Mount Carmel, who is the patron saint of Cancún. The first recorded visitors to the beaches of what is now Playa del Carmen came during the Early Classic Period (a.d. 300-600) of the Mayan civilization. Then called Xaman-Ha, or "waters of the north," Playa del Carmen was a rest stop of sorts for travelers making their way from the great cities of the Mayan world to the island of Cozumel.
We flew from Miami to Cancun and caught a coach over to Playa Del Carmen
We spent some time in Tulum which is a town outside of Playa Del Carmen. It was ok but quite touristy. We also visited Coba which was far more interesting and had extensive Mayan ruins inside the tropical forest just outside the town. We also saw a couple of crocodiles in the lake which was cool.
Playa del Carmen is gorgeous and we had an awesome chilled time, for that we give Playa del Carmen a great 8.5/10.
