Where I stayed
We unload our luggage and await our room number. Then we are informed that we are now split into two new groups and our group has to move to another hotel further away from downtown. It is another hour before we can check into our room at the Salma Hotel, but we are told "it's Egypt, you should be happy." This statement does not go over well with most of our new group who are also annoyed by the irrationality of splitting the group and moving. The opinion is expressed quite eloquently to the new tour leader, who again repeats "it's Egypt, you should be happy." By now the new group is almost hostile and just want to get away from it all. So far, it's been a total wasted day.
We intended on walking to the Cairo Tower downtown, but because of our new location, have to travel by taxi both ways. Cairo Tower opened in 1960 and was completely redone and reopened in March 2009. It is Cairo's tallest building and the views from it are quite picturesque on a clear day. However, the winds are gusting and the sand is blowing in the distance, obscuring the view of the pyramids but we do manage to see the immediate surrounding area around the Nile.
We obtain some items for our journey tomorrow to St. Catherine's and Mt. Sinai.
For dinner, we stay at the hotel and have dinner and a nice conversation with Earl and the two young Swiss chaps who are in our tour group.
We are too far away to walk to anything in the evening so we spend the time rearranging our bags for the next segment. It seems to be a wasted night.
