On Wednesday morning I packed up my gear and headed north to Cape Tribulation. If you're visiting Oz (or if you're an Aussie who hasn't been there), this place absolutely HAS to be on the itinerary! It's absolutely amazing!!! It's a tiny little town on the edge of the oldest rainforest in the world and only place on earth where two World Heritage Listed Areas (The Daintree Rainforest and The Great Barrier Reef) are side by side - the whole area is just mind-blowing!
Driving north through Mossman, I pulled onto the Daintree River ferry and drove on through the rainforest for another 30mins or so to Cape Trib. It's probably the most amazing half-hour I've ever spent in a car. The whole jungle surrounding me was literally screaming with life and the sights and sounds as I drove along were awesome!
On arrival I checked into a cabin at the Cape Trib Beach House Resort - http://www.capetribbeach.com.au/ - and chilled out for the afternoon, dipping in the pool and strolling on the beach. It's stinger season at the moment in North Queensland so the sea along the shore was out of bounds beacuse of the potentially fatal Box Jellyfish in the water. (Mind you, this didn't seem to bother a few dopes from a certain little country on the western edge of Europe, who I saw jumping around in the water in a sort of 'Russian Roulette' cooling down exercise.)
There was a lot of Paddys around that night and a good bit of craic was had at the bar shooting pool and engaging in drinking competitions that seemed to be being invented as they were played!
I got up late the following morning and booked a Jungle Surfing Canopy Tour for that afternoon. This consisted of strapping into a harness and being guided along a series of ariel ropeways through the rainforest canopy. (They don't tell you at the start that you have to do the last bit upside-down!) Highly recommend this - very interesting and the guides were great craic.
I had planned to stay on in Cape Trib that night but when I got back to the Beach House, there was a message to ring Pete, who had organised a fishing trip on the reef with a few of his buddies the following morning. This being an 'Austrailia Day' trip not to be missed, I got myself organised and headed back towards Port.
