I opted for a tour to Borobudur (booked through Great Tours at 200,000R not incl. entrance fees). It just seemed to be so much easier than public transport and the price also seemed reasonable at 20$ for a 12 hour tour.  Borobudur was combined with the Dieng Plateau (entrance to arjuna temple and Sikidang crater area = 20,000  & entrance to Lembah Dieng Resort 3,000 & entrance to general tourist plateau area 7,000) which I had no intentions of visiting but it was part of the package and I enjoyed it.  I was to be picked up at the hotel at 4:45 a.m. and was finally picked up at 5:30!!!!!  There were three others on the tour so not too crowded in the van.  The ride to Borobudur was smooth and quick.  The so called guide did not say a word until we arrived in Borobudur and then it was to sell us entrance tickets at 10,000 R less than at the ticket booth and I am sure he gets them for less but he did pass on a small discount!! Has to be a win win!!!!  Being that my pick-up was so early the hotel had packed me a breakfast box!!!! (So nice of them!!) and I was bringing it along to have breakfast in a quiet spot at the temple but was told that I couldn't bring any food or drink on the grounds!!!!  Had to have breakfast earlier than anticipated!!! The others had "free coffee" so I didn't feel I was delaying anyone.  The four of us decided to get together and pay a guide (50,000R) and it was well worth it.  He was excellent, gave great explanations along with where to stand for the best photos!!!!  I totally enjoyed Borobudur and was truely impressed with Borobudur Temple, originally built between 750 and 850 AD and is a Budhist temple.  Today it is only used once a year as a religious site and that is on Budha's birthday which is in May.  (Check my blog on Lumbini, Nepal regarding his birthplace!!!) Although not near as impressive as Angkor Wat it is still amazing.  The visit here took about two hours and then we were off to Dieng Plateau. Ttwo ladies from Holand joined us for the afternoon tour.

We had really amazing views from Borobudur to Dieng Plateau.  The ride with two additionnal passengers started to be quite uncomfortable as I was in the last seat in the back where you feel every bump on the road and the  stomach can start to churn especially on winding roads!!! To add to this the seat was broken  and the back was at a perfect recline so you had to work your abs all the time to stay more or less in a sitting position!!!! (At least we had a group where everyone had their turn in the back and it kind of gave everyone a break!!! -  I also noticed that nobody had booked the following day's tour through this company!!!!)

Dieng Plateau is at 2093m high  and holds the oldest Hindu temples in  Java although most have been destroyed and the small temples that remain have all been reconstructed (like all the other ruins in central Java). We visited the Arjuna Complex containing smaller Shiva temples. They were also other temples but really not very impressive unless your a temple specialist and need to see every single one of them!!!!!!  What was more interesting for me this afternoon was the visit to Kawah Sikidang simply because I had never visited a volcanic crater before.  It was quite impressive as well as the whole area with "bubbling sulphuric mud holes" and lakes.. Someone should really come and develop this area into amazing "hot springs"!!!!!! (Maybe something like Poring Hot Springs in Sabah, Malaysia!!!!)  The afternoon ended with a stop for lunch on the way back to Jogya.

Had a wonderful day and definitely recommend this tour as doing the whole circuit by public transport would be quite complicated and time consuming.

Kresna Tourist Office Jl. Prawirotaman No. 5 (phone 0274 375 912 also offers several different options and this office is close to Ministry of Coffee Hotel as well as the Ibis Hotel.  Although I did not use this office they staff was very informative and helpful.
