The journey from Cameron Highlands to Penang Island turned out to be a bit of an ordeal. First, we were lined up with a psychotic driver who seemed to be a little put out by something as he spent the whole time ranting and raving at some guy sitting near him. He wasn't the most accomplished of drivers either. Initially it wasn't the smoothest of drives and then he encountered major difficulties trying to manoeuvere the bus out of a petrol station. Eventually, the bus actually broke down in a tunnel and he seemed to be nearing a melt down himself as he spent the next hour while we were stuck charging up and down like a lunatic and shouting at anyone within earshot. A real people person.

Poor old Colm also took a turn for the worse after we'd swapped buses and ended up puking his guts up at one of the stops. As a result he didn't feel too hot during our brief stay on Penang which was a real pity. I left him in his sick bed to have a look around some of the historical sights in the city of George Town, where we stayed. The English came here in the 1800's and there was an old fort which was interesting with a lighthouse and the other usual bits and pieces. All the same, nothing to write home about or blog about for that matter.

Colm was starting to feel a little better so in the afternoon we took a trip out to the Kek Lok Si Buddhist temple on the outskirts. I thought it was really good and the drop of rain didn't affect our enjoyment too much. It was a big place on a hill (all temples seem to be built on hills) with lots on cool statues and symbols, including the obligatory Big Buddha of course. I'm sure I'll see loads of these over the next couple of months but this was a pretty good start. Spent an hour or so rambling around before returning to the city and a spectacular rain storm. A gentle reminder that the rainy season is fast approaching.
