We start this wonderful chapter in Brazil with a long ass bus ride from Florianopolis. A total of 17 hours to be exact...didn´t think Steve could sleep that long...but proved everyone wrong. Now we are in the Paraty´s bus station looking to meet up with a hostel owner, Ross. We called him but the maid spoke no English and we spoke no Portuguese. Conversation went something like this...Steve: ´is Ross there?´...Maid: `Ross &*$¨%$(%...#%&%$@! (substitute symbols with portuguese)...Steve: ´umm, he´s suppose to pick us up at the bus station´...Maid: ´!#*#%¨$..¨#¨*#%$$*....Steve: ´bus station?´...Maid: ´!%¨%$&¨*$%&*´....Steve looks at Wylie: ´what´s bus station in Poruguese?...Wylie gives Steve the attempted pronouciation thru the phrase book and he relays back to the maid...Maid: ´!%#%&$%&´...Steve: ´umm ok, is this bed & breakfast?´...Maid: ´Si´ (she understood!)....Steve: ´Ross?´...Maid: `¨!$¨$&*&¨%*...!$%#%&%¨*...
. then an uncomfortable silence persists...Steve: ´hmm..ok..obrigado, we´ll call back´...now what?...just as we decide to hit an internet cafe in an attempt to speak with someone that knew english, the owner finds us from outta nowhere...must of been our good looks...or the big red backpack? Anyways, when he said he was gonna pick us up, we thought he was gonna drive us back to the hostel. We step outside and he´s holding onto his bike...is Steve suppose to be sittin in the front of the handles and Wylie standing on the back while he peddles? Isn´t that how they do it back in China anyways? haha jk. It was a short 3 block walk so we just did our intro chat on the way to his bed and breakfast hostel. We begin by exploring the city...hmmm..no highrise...no bland grey concrete buildings..no perfectly paved roads..ahh...but still smells a little funky. Horse piss and dung to be excact..not everywhere but smells like Surrey..opps we mean Aldergrove..same thing...hehe. The city is still amazing, the tallest building is only 2 floors, cobblestone roads, and very colorful buildings (for some reason Steve´s infatuated with pink buildings *shrugs*)and nice peeps. The doors were a cool sight - brightly coloured from lemon yellow to sky blue to lime greens. From around the late afternoon we needed our fresh juice fix....we´re feining bad! We head to the beach but did not care for a dark cloud closing in over top of us...bad mistake...we get caught up in a tropical thunderstorm with just shorts, t-shirt and sandals...and our hostel is atleast 6blocks away...and this was a tropical rainstorm
. The locals didn´t seem to care about the lightning strike possibility and just kept swimming! We also notice other western rules don´t apply here like not standing under a tree and swimming in open water during a lightning storm, don´t fly kites near powerlines, and don´t go swimming right after you eat a full meal. We decided to finally make the dash as the rain didn´t let up...5 seconds we´re wet all over...alllll over...just wet..and slippery...and wet..haha..we know who is enjoying this alittle bit more than the rest of you guys...ahah..you know who you are. And remember the cobblestone roads?, they are bad for drainage...the streets are flooded so all the horseshit and piss are nicely mix in. But we need to get home...oh well...we walked through the horse dung, piss, dirt mixture for 6 blocks in the pissing rain! The roads we were walking on literally turned into rivers! We couldn´t take pictures because Steve had to protect the camera with his shirt wrapped around it. Finally we make it back home...time to take some showers and passed out! The next day we decide to go on a schooner tour...it´s on a saiboat and we visited around 5 beaches and ate lunch and did some snorkling...too bad our tour guide only spoke Portuguese (no english translation) so you guys can imagine when the tour guide cracks a joke...everyone is cracking up but these two Chinese guys looking dumbfounded in the back of the boat. Oh well, the snorkling was awsome...let´s see what Steve can do after learning how to swim in a month...he did it
! Gerry, this is either gonna boost your confidence or destroy it...hahah. We´re snorkling around seeing coral that looks like brains, starfishes, and lots of fish. It was cool when they start feeding the fishes and you can swim in a cloud of several hundred fishes...hmm..I think we would look like a buffet right now for sharks...time to disperse! We did some more island hopping and more snorkling...did we mention snorkling was awesome? It was. Hmm..we craved sashimi. Never found any pussy though...we mean octopussy..you guys are sick..;) The whole tour took almost 5 hours and after we decided to do a little shopping for some gifts and check out the local market where they were having a concert. Oh yeah...we had found a Japanese joint and ate some sashimi...they drink sake with salt around the rim..is this custom or just plain weird? We tried it and it reminded us of the salt water we accidentally gulped in the sea...nasty! That was the whole day and now to rest before we hit some waterfalls in the jungle for some freshwater actvities. We head outside Pararty for 30minutes in this van and almost missed the stop after realizing we are the only two left in the van. We finally arive at the Toboga Falls...this was so much fun...let´s see what happened...we climbed the falls head on, only to realize later on that there was a path on the left to head up. We realized that once we saw like 10 people at the top of the waterfall...yes, we were too anxious ok? Wylie had a close call as he walked 8-9 feet up the fall, his footing slips and he starts sliding down the rock, fast
! The bottom was shallow water and some big rocks to stop him...The only thing he was thinking while planting his feet flat to embrace the impact ´hope these rocks aren´t sharp´....luckily he landed on a flat part of the rock and survived *whew* (Note - Steve will be taking babysitting fees...seems like this is going to be a full time job)...Anyways, so Steve slides first down the falls, Wylie slips not once but twice! The second time he bangs his elbow open and hits the back of his head..ouch but funny...for Steve. We had the first slip on video, hilarious! Steve also slips but just on his ass. We also saw locals surfing the rock too...these guys are crazy. It´s so nice not to be in saltwater for once. Splashdown got nuthin on this place! There is even a bar ontop of the falls so you can basically spend all day there...unfortunatley the bump to Wylie´s head ruined the day for him...poor Wylie..but he was still a trooper and slid down some more...you can DO IT! At least Wylie didn´t start talking like a 5 yr old after, that´s how Steve knew he was A-OK. We end the day at the local market for some more concert action. Now we are on our third day in Paraty with just chillin in mind and planning for our next stop...either Ilha Grande or back to Rio before we take off...hmmm so many choices...well that´s it for now..until next time...hmmm..we usually end it off with something...hmmm..what was it....peace?...no....bye bye...hmm..that doesn´t sound right....All in!...sounds fimiliar but no...oh yeah...BOOYAKA! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Hello...welcome to another new and exciting entry from the guys in Brazil. Huge entry! Bring a glass of juice or print it and drop the kids off...this is going to be a long read.
