Oh oh oh 4,3,2,1 Happy New Year! And so 2006 began... Not exactly a stunning beginning. There I was, sitting with my brother and this random, but amusing, guy talking about nothing, more tired than drunk because we had started drinking at 7 and stopped an hour before because the ozzie beer makes me too full to really get drunk off of it. And this party we were at was decidedly lame. The theme was inappropriate, which in the States would mean lots of slutty outfits, but here meant girls dressed as STDs and guys in Hitler gear. And if this weren't disturbing enough, there was no music, no keg, no drinking games at all, and I only knew my roommate and his girlfriend who disappeared halfway through the night. It was definitely not one to remember, on par with all those ski resort new years with mom and dad where we played board games the entire night and went to bed after the ball dropped.
But even though 2006 didn't start with a bang, I have no doubt that it will definitely make up for its slow beginning. Yesterday I said goodbye to Hilary and Sarah, two of my closest friends in Australia, and the first people I met here. It was weird to think that I won't see them for such a long time, people that have been such a huge part of Australia for me so far. But I know that we'll meet again to laugh about our times together, getting lost, finding jobs, getting drunk, and taking silly pictures. They have been my family here, spending Thanksgiving and Christmas together and not being sad. I will miss them. Today I said goodbye to my little blue house at 37 Gordon St, and it was almost like saying goodbye to a good friend as well. I'll miss the trains going by, the smell of beer brewing, and yes, even the bugs. It stinky at times, dirty a lot of the time, but it was comfy and fun and I had some really really fabulous times there both with my roommates and with other friends. So closing the page on my Gordon St was hard. But saying goodbye to Brisbane as a whole was surprisingly hard. It was my home for three months and even it wasn't the most exciting place to live and even though it was steaming hot most of the time, I'll always look back on it fondly. In leaving Brisbane I am leaving Mt Cootha and West End, South Bank and Rue de Paris, friends and some really great times. Brisbane has been good to me, it's been fun getting to know its rhythms, it's sounds, and smells. I still get lost, so I can't say I know the geography, but that's still part of the fun. So here I am, now in Hervey Bay, about to embark on my Fraser Island adventure, and I can't wait to see what 2006 will bring!
Happy New Year everybody!!!!!
