Ok, so Sydney is really really spread out! Right now I am sitting in the hostel, not even going out to enjoy the city in my last couple of hours here because my legs and feet hurt so bad from the constant walking the past two days. I mean, we're talking about at least 10 miles in the last 48 hours! The first day, after a much needed nap and shower, I fought jetlag and went out exploring with a new friend (I told you guys I wouldn't ever really be alone!). So we walked up to the Harbor Bridge and the Opera House. The Opera House was beautiful, though it was overcast so it kind of blends in with the sky in all the pictures. But it's still really great just to actually see such a famous building in person. We walked across the Harbor Bridge and really, I think our Golden Gate is much prettier. Then we walked (seeing a trend here) through the Rocks, which is the oldest part of Sydney, where all the convicts and prostitutes lived, so that was really cool. Such little buildings and so otherworldly. Kind of reminded me of walking through Venice, but without the canals. We walked around the Botanical Garden for awhile and saw a ton of flying foxes, which my friend thought were cute, but I just hoped I wouldn't be hit with guano

. So after like 4 hours of walking around on 3 hours of sleep, we crashed at 8:30 from jetlag. Yesterday was an errands day. We had orientation at IEP and this woman actually convinced me that I really had to go mango picking! I was all set to do it, but then I realized that it's kind of what army recruiters do. Like telling all the troops that they are going to see the world and leave out the part that they're going to get shot at. She told us that we'd make tons of money, get buff and tan, but didn't mention it would be working 10 hrs a day, 7 days a week, living in a tent. Ummmm, no thanks. So having settled that, I went to figure out the rest of my life in Australia. And of course, true to my luck with phones, of course I ran into a problem with it being locked, which the lady at the cingular store promised me it wasn't. So after figuring that all out, we walked some more. I really know Pitt Street and George Street very well at this point. And I even made another friend, who even went to the Opera House with me to see Romeo and Juliet. It was absolutely amazing! The Opera theatre is gorgeous and the show was so incredibly beautiful, both visually and musically. Even though it was in French, you could still understand every word. Such talent! And what a venue! Both the bridge and the Opera House were much more impressive by night all lit up and everything. Unfortunately, walk home wasn't as pleasant. It started raining, and wearing flipflops (carrying my nice shoes I had worn for the Opera in my hand) I was slipping and slidding all over the place. Everyone must have thought I was completely wasted! And finally, I just took them off and went Kiwi. So then I was carrying two pairs of shoes, running down the street barefoot, looking like I total lunatic. But all the in name of good theatre! So I'm off to Brisbane, and more adventures to come!!!

good thing you bought shoes made4walkin!
You always did go the distance for theatre...but all the way to the Opera House in Sydney?! Good decision on the mango picking! Lots of love to you from Arlington/Outer Banks.

Lacey - Second cousin Laurie Slade here, writing from California. So excited you're traveling the world. I wish I had done that more, and now, you'll never have to say later in life 'I wish I had....'.
I totally understand going to see R&J as soon as you arrived. That's what I always did in any place - went to see a show. I'll never forget my experiences in England and Germany at the theatres. What's travel without theatre? Have fun, and keep us posted.
