Arrived In Quito.... Breathless.... Could be from the general excitement of starting off on seven months of travel and going round the world for the first time, but equally could just be because this place is so bloody high! The city sits at the same altitude as a substantial alp and the hill above the town is higher than Mont Blanc!
This will be the Andes then. Snow capped volcanoes and cloud forests abound.
The city itself is pleasant enough, but mostly quite modern and uninspiring. We were rather impressed by the balance of the local builders atop half finished constructions on every street corner – it would seem health and safety inspectors are a little thin on the ground...!
The old town was nicer, you could easily be in Spain or Italy. Grand old churches and civic buildings line cobbled streets.
We're busily booking up our next few weeks with the Galapagos, the jungle and a short Spanish course to get us on our feet in the communication stakes to come. First though we are off to the market town of Otavalo – Catherine is in need of a new hat!
