These pressure ridges are formed in the ice when the tide rises and falls. It is said that the ice actually moves up to 3 meters, everyday! So the ice is pushed up...similar to how mountains are formed, when the plates collide there's nowhere to go but up! I got to take a guided hike through the pressure ridges, there were a few seals that had come up through the cracks and holes but were on the other side of the ridges. Most importantly you had to stay on the flag marked trail...BEWARE OF BLACK FLAGS!
