Alrightio folkios, Got married the other day in a traditional Guatemalan wedding, kitted out with full indigenous dress and peasants straw hat. My Dutch mother clucked over me while my American wife swooned. My mistress in the corner however was boiling up rabbits. Wierd but true... almost...
So I've spent the last week learning Spanish and have made good friends with a couple of Yank chicks (my wife and my mistress!) and a Dutch bird (my mother!) who are in my class. We went to Monterrico at the weekend which is a volcanic black sand beach surrounded by mangrove swamps on la costa Pacifica cerca de la frontera de El Salvador.
Got robbed, saved the birds from the clutches of all the dodgy guatemaltecos, had a great night out, failed miserably at surfing and went floating precariously half-way along the enormous beach in the dodgy riptides. When we arrived it was absolutely pissing down but that never perturbed us - it was a novell experience to go swimming in such torrential rain, in a black sea with black sky and jet black sand! Shame the girls got all their stuff nicked while we were swimming! Brightened up big time on Sat and Sun though, so now I'm pretty much looking like P.diddy and am darker than most of the Mayans here!
Antigua is a really beautiful city, ornate colonial buildings line decorative cobbled streets and flowery plazas.
Not the best for the learning here however, there's so many Americans, it's uncanny. 33 to 4 Euros/Canadians in the school! Nights out on the bev are constant, there's so many great bars, not many people speaking Spanish and I'm not on my own with the family this time with 4 Yankee house mates - Great fir the craic fir sure, pero no el Espanol. Somehow I've landed a job in an Irish bar which just adds to the feeling this ain't really a Spanish speaking place at all. In the most bizzare of interviews, we were playing a football match with a bunch of Guatemaltecos which had been organised by the co-ordinator at the school in a drunken bet. If we won we got free pizza for the whole school at the local gringo bar and if we lost we had to sing "YOU are the champions" in a packed bar. We obviously lost (half of them were semi-pro!) and embarrasment ensued. Anyway, when I was substituted for being so shockingly bad, this Irish girl comes up to me and says "Where are ye from", "Am frae Scotland", "Grand, ye've got a great scottish accent, which is close enuff to the Paddy lingo, wi yer big sideburns you'll go down a treat! Come work in ma bar". So I got the job, simple as that! Great free food, free beer, and a positive income for once. I spent a fortune in pricey Belize so this was becoming a necessity.
Off to Lago Atitlan and to hike a volcano sometime soon.
