Perhentian Islands, 17 & 18-6-2005
We leave Thailand on Friday, and it all goes slower then we'd expected. We got up at 7.00, but at 12.00 we were only 45 kilometres further. We reach the border of Malaysia at 16.30, and then you can set the time one hour later. We are not going to get to our final destination (Perhentian Islands) today, so we spent the night in Kota Baru. We knew that we were in a Muslim country, because of all the summoning for the prayers. Friday is to the Muslims what the Sunday is to the Christians, and the Saturday to the Jews. So, almost everything is closed, so we have to go to McDonalds.
We take a taxi to the pier the next morning. Because we are the only ones that have booked for the slow boat, we get a free upgrade to the speed boat that leaves an hour later, but arrives earlier. We sail over the deep blue water, and we can see the islands from here. In front of the bay, we have to change to a little wobbling boat, that can take us to the beach. Then it is only a few steps trough the water, and we hear the song "welcome to paradise" from Green Day in our heads.
The Perhentian Islands are part of the Marine National Park, so the building on the island stopped. There are no roads, so all the transportation has to go over water. Our bay (the Coral bay) has 2 "restaurants" 1 diving school, 1 shop/post office and 4 hut renters. We snorkel over the coral that is right in front of our door, in water that is the temperature of a half hour old bath. The diversity is huge, and we see a lot of things we didn't see on Ko Tao. But we didn't see much of the fish that we saw there. At night we join the beach BBQ (3 euro!), and we enjoy lobster and kingfish!
