Farewell to Spokane. This is kind of a tough urban town, even though it's in the middle of nowhere - more tattoos than I've seen anywhere else.

The Washington heat wave continues - it was hot! Instead of taking I 90 straight west to Seattle, I took a northern route through the Cascades. To no avail - still hot! I rode through a town called Leavenworth that had done itself up as a German Alpen-dorf. All the store signs were written in that medieval German style - like the New York Times banner, come to think of it - and the stores, hotels and even the fast food joints had that Swiss chalet look, white stucco interspersed with dark wooden beams. Unfortunately it as still just as hot.

I stopped at a gas station for some Gatorade, and also got this huge vanilla ice cream/chocolate chip cookie sandwich and as soon as I got back on the bike I knew I was doomed. I needed to nap. Luckily rivers were plentiful in these heights, and in about 1/2 hour I crossed one that had a parking lot, a shady field and water access. I pulled over, had a freezing dunk in the water and a nice nap, and after about 2 hours continued on. Just like I imagined it would happen. The power of intention, eh?

I rode through Seattle, which seemed nice and had some very pretty residential areas north of downtown. It was by far the most crowded downtown I had seen since NYC - kids everywhere in hordes. Seemed they might be coming back from the ferry, as it was the weekend and hot & sunny days are rare here. But I figured I'd explore Seattle on another trip and headed on south. I wanted to camp if I could, but that didn't seem likely. I rode into Tacoma, which is very empty and seemingly conservative compared to Seattle, but has a nice little 'old town' section, though very standard. Lots of nice views as well, though.

Finally it was getting late, and I consulted by GPS for a cheap place to stay, and ended up in the Motel 6 in Fife, WA. After checking in I rounded the office building to my room and was greeted by something like a kiddie riot - 23 (I counted them) people, mostly kids, in the pool, right next to my room, and 6 miniature dogs of various descriptions in little foldable cages on the grass. This was about 8PM. But they were all hving such a great time, and damn if those dogs weren't cute, it was hard to do anything but laugh.

Then dinner and sleep.
