Settled in for the run-up to Chrimbo

It's been 9 weeks since I got here. That's two out of 5 months and it has flown by at such a stupid rate that I can't remember what I've done from one day to the next. The whole week is spent at work and before I know it, it's the weekend again... Which is rather worrying considering the tiny amount of money I've actually managed to save.
One thing you cannot fail to notice when you get here is the country's insatiable appetite for sport. Rugby, International Rules, AFL, Soccer, Cricket, Golf, Swimming. You name it, they're obsessed by it. Obviously with such a sport-mad country it goes without saying that there is no small amount of animosity between the Aussies and the 'Poms' when it comes to the Ashes, but I can't believe the extent to which the media indulges in pommy-bashing. Yes that's the common phrase used to describe it. Television's the worst, with subtle digs thrown into adverts and news programs at every opportunity.
Adverts aired on TV - after every 5 minutes of actual programming - show the Aussie team being paged by Richie Benaud saying "marvellous" before they meet on the edge of a cliff, Mission Impossible style, with a sweeping shot from a helicopter and some guy with a Hollywood voice going on about "our invincible team". Next up, the most annoying Australian that ever set foot on this earth pipes up. "Look out, Poms" he says, our cricket team has grown up with the goodness of Weet-Bix and will whoop your arse because of it. Yeah well we've got Weetabix which, by the way, is a hundred times better, and while you lot are poncing around eating bits of wheat we've just had a fry-up. Who cares if your better at cricket, at least we've had a decent breakfast.
I seem to have developed a rather unhealthy obsession with the sport since coming here. Whole days have been wasted watching bowl after bowl, staring endlessly at the TV, cheering as Flintoff smacks another ball across the boundary and crying as Monty gets bowled around his legs by Warne sending the Ashes flying back to Australia. Ah well never mind, the Aussies played well and deserved to win. I'm just hoping we win at least 1 of the last two or I'll never hear the end of it from my workmates.
Enough of the commentary anyway. I'm having a great time over here. Sydney is growing on me, and having the beach just down the road is an unbelievable blessing. There are two massive pubs in Coogee where we tend to spend our evenings on the weekend, and there is a real sense of community in this little seaside suburb - I always feel very at home when I get back from work. Nick is staying in the city for a few months so I meet up with him every now and again, Ian arrived yesterday, Ems & Farley arrive on Thursday and Carsten gets here on Friday. My bank account is dwindling but, as Donnie Brasco would say, forget about it. I'm having too good a time to give a shit.
Hope it's not too cold, wet and miserable back home. Hehe. It's strange to think that I will have had over a year of summer weather by the time October hits next year in Blighty. You should see this tan ;-) Hope you all have a great Christmas & NYE. I will probably have a whole loads of photos from the holiday break so keep checking back. Let me know what you get up to.
