Tally Ho and Orf We Go!
Entry 1 of 5 | show all | print this entry |
Hello Bobs, 'ello sweetheart, oi oi matey, 'ello me luverrrr, y'alright there lar, ey up chook, get out of here ya bonnie wee bastard and pess off back to yer own poncy country...
These are just some of the exciting variety of possible greetings that might be bestowed upon me as I travel around this most familiar of countries - the U.K. Or parts of it at least. Yes ladies and gentlemen it is past time I explored the country that bore me from its womb and threw me bewildered into a land where irate Irishmen bombed us, little shiny round discs enthralled music enthusiasts everywhere, and (god forbid) Boy George, Spandau Ballet and UB40 were topping the charts. Thankfully - musically at least - things have changed since those heady days, but one thing that has not is the sheer volume of places to go, things to see, history to learn about, and rocks to climb. And so it is with great delight that I write to you on these humble pages and inform you that I will once again be hitting the road, and offering you more of the same anecdotes, insights and ramblings that I know you've all been positively enthralled by before.
This time however, I'm going upmarket... No sharing seats with 28st Americans, no weirdos who think I look like Mick Jagger, no screaming Polish women, no incontinent tramps. No my dear readers, we're hiring a car. Oh yes. A roadtrip to wherever we fancy going, whenever we fancy going there, with a 2 week time constraint. Ahh the joy! The bliss! The extreme sense of freedom! The hostels full of hot Europeans! It goes without saying that I am rather excited by all this, but where to go? What to see? What to do? Well we'll be having a giggle with some old friends, climbing big rocks in Portland and - of course - the Peak District, checking out a number of cities, showing Carsten a few castles and cathedrals (whether he likes it or not), and doing an inordinate amount of real ale 'tasting'. But before all that, I'll be showing ze German around our beautiful capital and subsequently doing all the touristy things that I've never done (despite having lived here for nearly a year).
And so without further ado, the Tour d'Angleterre begins...
