Upon arrival in gorak Shep we quickly had lunch and decide to head first up to Kala Pattar to enjoy the view on Mt. Everest. It's a short two hour trek up to 5,550m which I ended up running in the end as the clouds decided to rear their ugly heads and obscure part of the Cwn icefall. Still I had the most amazing views on Mt
The trek to Everest Base Camp was quite exciting although by this time we had walk 6 hours above 4,900m and we were completely exhausted. We walked all the way to the edge icefall and found the camps which did not belong to climbers at all but to the marathon runners. Indeed on the 29th of May a big event is organized were runners (mainly sherpas – who can run at these altitudes but them…) run from Everest Base Camp all the way down to Namche Bazaar. Completely insane if you ask me…
Talking about insanity…we decided we had enough of the bitter cold of each lodge so we trekked as far as we possibly could from gorak Shep all the way down to Namche Bazaar in one day. It was the longest trek I have ever done. It covers 35km and although it’s just a difference of 1,800m the valleys mean you are forced to go up and down all the time. We needed a day of rest in Namche as my right knee developed a pain which caused me to limp most of the way and would stay with me for most of the trek. Luckily we managed the final leg in one day from Namche to Lukla. You can see a picture of me completely and utterly exhausted but very satisfied of the fantastic trek I had managed!
