this evening we headed into downtown santa monica for dinner. the downtown area is a 20 min walk from our motel on main street. the whole downtown area appears new with all the usual high street brands but also lots of restaurants. on the way we pasted several public buildings and it's pleasing to see that some care has been given to gardens and green spaces around them. a fair bit of external art has been encouraged too. walking around is easy thanks to traffic-free streets and there are lots of street entertainers in the evening. we sat outside for dinner and had a fab your australian guitarist across the street. however, for the last couple of days we've been on the hunt for some shower gel. it's surprisingly difficult to find anywhere that sells lynx or anything similar. we passed loads of shops, shopping malls and large department stores but none of them appear to sell anything as normal as gents shower gel. sorry, i digress. oh, while i remember, our guide book informs me that santa monica was made famous by the baywatch tv series that was filmed here.

tomorrow morning we head on to our last city, san diego. the coastal city of san diego is close to the mexican border town of tijuana. we've been advised not to make the trip across the border, so we won't bother making the trip. we're staying in the downtown area known as the gaslamp quarter.

our trip from here will take us through los angeles and out into orange county. we'll hug the coast all the way passing some famous surfing beaches.
