we headed out for an explore of san diego after checking in
. first we walked to the railway station. the modern terminus uses the old santa fe railway station. i think the iconic trains are long gone, replaced by modern shiny engines, but the decor of the station is outstanding.
after that we walked on to a rather twee shopping area called seaport. it's all modern replicas of older buildings and full of chinese made gifts. we're having a real problem finding authentic us made gifts. turns out the usa is more dependant on the chinese than we are aware. they own a lot of the us govenment debt and appear to supply most of their consumer products. interesting.
rather than eat out, we found a proper food supermarket and took a feast of sushi back to our room.
after a rest we ended the evening in the swimming pool and the spa pool.
today we're going to explore balboa park. there are a couple of interesting museums dedicated to space exploration and aviation. the aircraft carrier uss midway is here in the harbour so we might take a look onboard and, if i can push my luck, the maritime museum.
here we are in san diego. an easy drive down from santa monica yesterday. we left santa monica and skirted around la before picking up the pacific coast highway - route 1 - near longbeach. we had hoped to see the queen mary but alas i must have taken a wrong turn. hey ho. we hadn't planned to go inside, just to view from a distance. we stopped close to huntingdon beach to see all the surfers - as featured in the hollister window - but they were charging 20 dollars to park for a 15 mins. no thanks. we managed to park a bit further on for free. we took time out for lunch and parked up at luaguna beach. we bought some food from a mexican shack and sat on the beach watching the surfers. very pleasant. we arrived at our hotel about 2pm. it's a rather smart 4 star hotel that i managed to get a very good rate on tripadvisor. downside is that they charge for wifi, hence we are sat outside a starbucks using the free wifi provided by the shopping mall next door. lovely hotel though with a decent size swimming pool and gym.
