This was our final day on the island following a VERY hectic day at the Polynesian Cultural Center, so it was very much a "rest and relaxation" day for all of us. Needless to say, we all slept in late (relatively speaking) to recover, then got a bit of a head start on our packing to get ready for Sunday's flight home.

Mom still had not found her mu-mu yet, so we decided to make one last shopping trip over to the International Marketplace down in the center of Waikiki. If you haven't been there before, this is like a huge bazaar with a bunch of little stalls and shops - sort of like a mini swap meet in the middle of town. The Marketplace is actually right across the street from the main Outrigger hotel, where we saw the Society of Seven on Wednesday night, so we put on our walking shoes and hiked over through the crowds.

We wandered around the Marketplace for a while and checked out the wares Diamondhead Rainbow

. Of course Mom had to get a picture of the central waterfall & Koi pond, which was beautiful, and some of those koi were absolutely huge! By the time we left there, Mom finally got two really pretty mu-mus at a great price, Chris got himself a nice black & burgundy Aloha shirt, and I even picked up a really nice pair of sapphire earrings. Finally, we had all our shopping done!

On an interesting side note, they were closing down the main street that we walked along for the 6th Annual Spam Jam while we were shopping. This annual festival is, despite what you might think, a festival of the canned meat and not about the annoying emails, despite the fact that the festival takes place on the anniversary of the first spam email that is known to have been sent (10 years ago!). For some unknown reason, Hawaiians really love Spam, so they created a whole street fair to celebrate it. Typical of Hawaiians, they don't just celebrate it, however, they also turn it into a food drive for local food banks and shelters.

With the Spam Jam going on, going anywhere in the car was pretty much out of the question, so we decided to just have dinner in the Shorebird Restaurant there at the hotel. The food and service was excellent, as always, and I had one last chance to cook my own steak back on the big grill while Chris and Mom made do with the massive salad bar again Diamondhead Rainbow

. After eating my first meal in that place back in 1993, I'm going to miss it again now that we are gone!

After dinner we headed right out the door to the beach (a whole 3 or 4 feet) just in time to see beautiful rainbow just off the point of Diamondhead. Talk about a picture perfect final evening in Hawaii. Thankfully the pictures captured the rainbow so we could share it here with you. Then it was time to head over to the jetty and watch the sunset, which was particularly brilliant. We actually convinced Mom to pose (sort of) for a photo in front of the sunset, then she took one of the two of us, along with a bunch of pictures of the sunset itself.

If you have to have a last day in Hawaii, you can't really ask for much better than this.

Aloha!
