As we had booked all of our places to stay for the last few weeks of our trip in advance, we couldn't remember what the place in Kumarakom was going to be like. We arrived at the little jetty at 9 in the morning and got a tuk tuk to Waterscapes, where we were staying, and my goodness were we in for a treat. We had managed to book a hut-room-mini-cottage on stilts right by the edge of the huge Lake Vembanad so it had an incredible view. We were also right next to a bird sanctuary that was lovely, if a little sweaty (it’s ridiculously humid here) to walk around – even though we never actually saw that many birds.

We spent 3 glorious days lounging by the lakeside reading, watching the boats, tackling crosswords and walking along the canals. We also took a boat tour of the narrow backwaters to get a glimpse of what life is like living there. The houses are gorgeous with brightly painted exteriors and right by the water’s edge so people use the water to wash themselves, their clothes and their crockery. We meandered down the waters watching people going about their days, stopping briefly to smile and wave at us. It looked like a pretty nice way to live.

It was difficult to tear ourselves away but we had a date to try to find some tigers!
