It was lovely to return to Rio and to visit different parts of the city. This time around we stayed in Botafogo, a much more upmarket area – and it really showed. We felt a lot safer wandering around the streets, partly because of this but also because we're a little more experienced by now.

The funicular ride up to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain was wonderful, incredible views of the whole of Rio – beaches, mountains and all. We spent a lovely afternoon strolling through Santa Teresa (the old, cobbled streets part of the city) and taking in the beautiful Municipal Theatre (we tried to get tickets to the Nutcracker for the afternoon but it was sold out - so we went to the cinema instead).

On our last few hours in South America we strolled along Ipanema and Copacobana beaches and for the first time properly appreciated the city.  It really is unique in terms of setting and landscape, and of all major cities in the world undoubtedly one of the most beautiful.

And so, that was it – South America it’s been a blast, thanks for good times and for not mugging us.  On to…. India! (via a little detour to London first of course).
