Miles Driven: 3118
Time In Car: 61 Hours, 41 Minutes (Holy Toledo Batman!)
States Added: Ohio and Kentucky for a total of 10
On the iPod:
Through Michigan: If it's Michigan it must be Motown...with a little Madonna, Eminem and Alice Cooper thrown in for a good mix of the Michigan mojo.
Around Kentucky: We met a really great couple at our inn here outside Lexington and he happened to be a pianist so he gave us one of his CDs to play in the car.
Oops:
Michigan challenged our road trip rhythm. We made a 1/2 hour driving mistake on our way to Saginaw to see Bob's sister Jeanie and her family. Then, heading South from Saginaw we made a terrible mistake and ended up in DETROIT where there were not one but THREE freeway construction closures. Add to that nearly 3 inches of rain...
Cultural Differences: We must discuss the conundrum that is Kentucky. It is famous for bourbon, yet half of its counties are 'dry'. In fact, Bourbon County is dry. Of the other half, some are 'wet' and a few are 'moist'. It's population is very religious with 59% stating they are Southern Baptist alone, yet an overwhelming percentage of the state's revenue comes from drinking, smoking and gambling (bourbon, tobacco and horses). Isn't that just the greatest?? We also noticed people refer to the civil war as 'The Northern Aggression.' Plus...drive thru gambling!
Culinary Experiences:
Michigan: We have been trying to eat the local specials wherever we find ourselves. At a restaurant in Saugatuck we asked the waitress "What kind of food is Michigan known for?" She looked at us puzzled..."What do you mean?" she asked. We explained that we like to eat the local specialties and offered some examples. She pondered a moment and said "Meat." So...we had meat.
Ohio: 1000 Places To See Before You Die, US and Canada talks about Cincinnati chili. So we looked up THE quintessential restaurant to get this local specialty on our way through town. '5-Way Chili'...spaghetti with meat sauce, cheese, beans and onions. Surprisingly yummy!
Kentucky: Well, we had bourbon with dinner...
Tourist Activities: Kentucky Horse Park, Old Friends Horse Farm and a drive through bluegrass country. The bluegrass country of movies really does exist...absolutely lives up to our pre-concieved notions.
Non-Tourist Activities: Seeing Bob's sister Jeanie and her husband Blake and kids Kate, Alec and Charlie. Far too short of a visit.
Bob Is Happy Because: We are staying in a WET county!
Connie Is Happy Because: There is a resident black standard poodle named Nick at the place we are staying.
Sidenote: Bob was disappointed when he asked the innkeeper "Are there any ghosts in this inn?" and she responded "Only the Holy Ghost".
Question Of The Day: 'Why isn't my beard growing in evenly?' Bob Travis

Brian's wet dream
We thought drive through daiquiri stands in New Orleans were something, but drive through betting is a dream come true for Brino!

Kentucky and parts south
Welcome to the Southern Baptist Convention. I love the wet, dry, and moist county stuff. Demon bourbon is a threat everywhere. I'm glad you finally found rain. We're preparing the storm front in Oklahoma for your arrival.

missing days
so glad to hear from you today, was a little worried since you've been so good about blogging each night.
I am interested in knowing what your gas prices have been and which states seem to be better. Was Iowa the state you were most impressed with because you hadn't heard much about it? How were their gas prices?
Work is just the same!
Lilac Parade this weekend. (taking grandkids!) Our weather is suppose to be improving (sure), yet still raining this week but you aren't missing any snow.
Love watching the map feature on where you've been and where you are going.
How are your hineys? Later, Barbara
Mooooooooooo
I'm glad you guys aren't vegetarians.
Are you going to Georgia or West Virginia?
The South
Make sure you watch your language when your in the buckle of the bible belt. Don't forget--most of the food is made with lard. I expect to be served meat and bourbon next time you have us for dinner.
