Total Miles To-Date:  1070
Total Hours To-Date:  20 Hours, 30 Minutes
Total States To Date:  5

On The iPod:  Today would have been our buddy's 13th birthday...so it was Lyle Lovett all day!
Difficulty Of The Day:  Yesterday's fried pickles!
Tourist Attractions:  Devil's Tower National Monument, Prairie Dog Compound, Deadwood SD, Crazy Horse Monument, Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills in general.
Question:   Road-tripping is one thing we are good at AND we really enjoy it...how does one make a living road-tripping?
Observation:  Home On The Range really does exist...deer and antelope really are out there playing!
Cultural Difference:  Actually slowed the car for two cowboys, six sheep dogs and about 200 head of sheep to travel down the road.
Favorite Experience:  The scenic drives through the Black Hills...the tunnels are great fun.  Tunnel on Needles Drive, Black Hills SC
Tunnel on Needles Drive, Black Hills SC
Least Favorite Experience:  Not that the Crazy Horse Monument isn't great to visit...but $20 for a statue that has only been completed by about 5% in 60 years?????   Crazy Horse Monument
Crazy Horse Monument

Oops:  Got to Mt. Rushmore late in the day and the sun was behind it.  We saw it, but we didn't go in for the Bob at Devil's Tower Monument
Bob at Devil's Tower Monument
whole experience.  So we have 25 photos of Devil's Tower and barely one of Mt. Rushmore.  Drat.  Can't win them all.

Big Rock!!
Looks like you are seeing some very interesting sites. Sorry you missed getting a shot with those great American men of the mountain. I think we should have a mountain of great American women one day, don't you? Maybe Oprah? Rosa Parks? Helen Keller? Who do you suggest?
Maybe we need to start a fund for that when you return.
Anyway,... we miss seeing your faces in the office. A beautiful country, isn't it?

Crazy Horse
You're right, B&C, they haven't progressed very far in sculpting the Crazy Horse Monument. Korzak (the original designer & sculptor) worked alone for years and made very slow progress. His wife and family have carried the work forward, but much of the effort seems to have gone into building infrastructure, developing promotional tools and newsletters, and raising funds. Probably all of the support work has been necessary to keep the project going, but I can't help but think it's slowed the process. On the other hand, looking at the sculpture from a distance fails to reveal the tons and tons and tons of rock that have been blasted and removed.

WOW
WOW, you guys are making quite the headway in just 2 days! Speaking of your dearly departed Lyle, Lyle Lovett is playing at Chateau St. Michelle in Woodinville on Fri. July 25th and Sat. July 26th. Of course, you probably already knew that. Greg and I thinking about going. Love your travel news. I feel like I am (almost) there.
