4-15-09 The evening was nice and warm
We had an invitation to attend the anniversary program for the Yoga school that Tina and Dawn belong to. It was very interesting. They had an MC who loved to hear his own voice so did most of the talking and was able to fit in a couple of other acts in.
They had an American modern dance dancer, a French belly dancer, and some Yoga demonstrations.
After that as we were heading home, we came across a hotel that was giving a Malaysian dance performance. It was very interesting.
As we jockeyed around to get a good view we found our selves in the sound booth for the show. Better then front role seats.
4-16-09 SUNNY DAY
It rain a lot last night but this morning it was sunny.
Met with Clint on of the headmasters of one of the English schools.
He has made arrangements for me to meet Ma Ma Moon. She is an older lady who lives in Moon Hill Village next to the famous Moon Hill. She became famous herself when her story was told. She was a poor farmer's wife and decided that she could make some extra money going to Moon Hill and selling drinks to the tourist who bicycled out there from Yangshuo. In time more and more foreign tourist began to come. She felt that in order to make more money and meet these new tourists she had to learn their language. At the age of 50 Ma Ma Moon began to learn English. It is said that now she can speak as many are 8 languages a little but English is her favorite and she does it very well. Many tourists began to ask her to be their guide. In order to do so she had to register with the local government. She became the oldest guide in Yangshuo. Despite her age and the fact that she is completely illiterate she still gives excellent guided tours of the area. One only has to look in her notebooks to discover all the wonderful comments that people have about her.
It is an interesting story about how she got her name. When she first was unofficially giving tours a couple of young Canadian men met her. One of them was ill with stomach problems. She took them to her house and feed and cared for them. As they left they said that she was like there mama and they would remember her as their Ma Ma Moon. At first she did not understand and did not want to be called that but in time as the word spread she accepted the name happily.
Ma Ma Moon has had a dream for the last few years.
She wants to teach everyone almost 500 people (women, children, men) how to speak English. She would also like her foreign guests to have a place to learn Chinese. She is now in the process of setting up a school in her village. As she puts it "If I can learn a language anyone can."
Spending the afternoon with Ma Ma Moon will surely be one of the highlights of this trip.
Behind us you can see Moon Hill (see the hole in the mountain). She had just got back from take a group of 10 foreign tourist up that mountain this morning.
4-19-09 Sunny and warm
Everyone is out for their Sunday strolls. At the Juice Bar things are picking up the only problem is that we are leaving tomorrow night and might run out of our supplies before then. Oh well we will just close up I guess. Sushi seems to be a big hit. Had a new student last night. She was a bus driver and then a truck driver up north near Beijing. She came here a month ago to learn English. She was to get a cab service going in her home town. She wants to join our free open discussion group she heard about. All are welcome. Well I guess that is all for this week. Hainan tomorrow.
