Arrived back in Singapore today after a week back home. Have a lot of work to do this week before heading to Hong Kong next weekend but plan to get out and about as much as time and my jet lagged body allow me to. Stay tuned.................
Started Sunday off with a trip to the Jarung Bird park. Now I went to Parrot Jungle when I was a kid and this is definitely a few notches above that. I was hoping to see some birds that I haven't seen before since I am in a totally different part of the world and I did see a few that looked new. One of my mother's favorite sayings I remember when I was growing up was, "may the bird of paradise fly up your nose"...that was her way of cursing in front of my sister and I without using one of the really bad words. So I was excited to finally see some real
Birds of Paradise. I also liked seeing the Lorries, though I am still not exactly sure what a Lory is. But, they were cute and lively and loud and they came right up to you and ate from your hand
Next it was on to Haw Par Village...this place is one of the more bizarre places I have visited on my travels but interesting and well worth the time to see it. It is sort of like the Chinese version of the Seven Deadly Sins and also depicts epic battles between right and wrong. I started out by visiting the Ten Courts of Hell..and truth be told if this was taught in my Sunday School, it might have saved my parents a lot of grief during those "teenage years"...well probably not but I am sure they would think it was worth a shot anyway. I am sure in hindsight they think anything would have been worth a shot. =) After the Courts of Hell, I was treated to depictions of all sorts of vices...dropping out of school, gambling, drinking, being a loyal friend, being kind to animals, the art of deception etc. There were also a lot of animals acting in various human-like situations and some were very disturbing, some were bizarre and some were down right comical. I can imagine seeing this with so many of you and the comments flying around in my head were hilarious and unfortunately mostly not appropriate for this site..I invite you to view the pictures and make up your own commentary =).

making a run for it
. They were tiny birds and seemed to like their space well enough. But it was really hard to see the big birds of prey, especially the eagles, in not so large areas. Besides that, it was a nice way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. Nothing acutely spectacular but I am trying to get away from the Singaporeans two favorite past times of eating and shopping and get out and see things that don't exist in a shopping mall. But some of the things I have seen in the malls are pretty interesting as well. Definitely not the Martin Square Mall I spent many of my Friday nights hanging out in as a freshman in High School. I could really have gotten into some trouble in this mall...Next it was on to Haw Par Village...this place is one of the more bizarre places I have visited on my travels but interesting and well worth the time to see it.
