After leaving Inverness, we drove once more past Urquhart Castle, and south to the road that cuts through the Glen Shiel area of Scotland.  There is a road marker here to commemorate the last battle fought in Scotland, the Battle of Glen Shiel.  The area is, as the name suggests, a glen, running between the Five Sisters Mountains area.  Very picturesque, very beautiful.

At the far end of Glen Shiel is Eileen Donan, said to be Scotland's most romantic castle.  Of course, I think I've heard that about a couple of other castles, too, in the many brochures (135?  290?) in the back seat of our car.

The Eileen in Eileen Donan actually means 'island.'  So the castle's name means Donan's Island, as it is built on an island.  It is a wonderful castle, with displays inside and several fully furnished rooms which you can visit.  The kitchen has life size mannequins frozen in the act of bustling around the kitchen preparing dinner.  Almost every room has stone steps winding up into little nook and cranny hideaways.  There are little cupboards scattered around the public visitors' areas, one of which you open to find a skull looking back at you!

It was our only rainy day in Scotland so far, so it was a good day to be mostly indoors.
