We were staying in Patong Beach, as Phuket town was a bit too far from the beach. Patong was also the only place in Phuket we'd heard of, so we figured we couldn't go too wrong with. By the time we arrived at our hotel, it was early evening. And it was a shock having come from the relaxed atmosphere of Ao Nang. The place was heaving. Lots of restaurants, bars, shops etc. We were staying on quite a busy road about 15 minutes walk away from the beach. As we'd arrived quite late, we checked into our room, and headed out to find some food.
To be honest, we didn't get up to a great deal in Patong. We had pre-booked and paid for 5 nights here, and we wish we hadn't! We just ended up wishing the time away
One night we headed out to the local boxing stadium to watch some Muay Thai boxing. The first fight started at about 9.00pm, and the evening continued until past midnight with 9 different fights. The kids started first, then the final match was the fight for the belt. It was a good night, but a long time to be sitting in a hot stadium watching so many matches. By the end of it we were probably more tired than the competitors!
We decided to use our time in Patong to plan what we would do with regards to our visa. We really wanted to go to Cambodia, and it was the plan to head there for 10 days or so. However, to combine it with a visa trip, we would have to get a return flight. The reason for this is that when you enter Thailand by air, you get given a 30 day visa, but if you enter via a land border, you only get given a 15 day visa
Plan B. was to spend a couple of weeks in Bali. However, the price of flights from Southern Thailand soon put an end to that idea.
In the end, we booked a day return flight to the cheapest destination we could find.....Kuala Lumpur! We leave early in the morning on the 9th Nov. from Phuket, spend 7 hours in Kuala Lumpur airport, then return that same evening. It's not ideal, but the best way to sort out our visa problem. The way we've worked it out is that our new visa will take us right up to the day we leave Thailand to come home.
The only thing we really enjoyed about our stay in Patong was the fact we were a 30 second walk away from a night food market. We bought dinner there a few times and loved the fact that not only the food was tasty, but it cost us no more than a couple of pounds!
Next stop on our island hopping tour is the famous Koh Phi Phi!!
