First I have a 5 hour bus journey from Playa del Coco to San Jose. I was slightly worried that my taxi to the bus station wouldn't actually turn up but it did! First victory. My second one was that the bus actually stops at the airport so I don't have to go into San Jose, pay a $30 cab ride and get to the airport. When I got to the station there was about 6 people getting on the bus, I got on and suddenly there were 30 people. Seriously where did the come from?? It got more ridiculous when we stopped ten minutes later and what seemed like a million people got on. The line never ended! You know that clown sketch where tons of clowns fit into one tiny car? It was honestly like that but with Costa Ricans rather than clowns. I swear there were more humans than bus.
We arrived at the airport and I was super early. Like 8am for a 10:45am check in. Here I was worried I wouldn't make it, Costa Rica public bus I apologise for my lack of faith in you. When I got there I had no idea where to go. I spoke to some taxi people and they worked out that where I needed was just behind me, or they thought. By this time a cab had pulled up and they inclined that I didn't have to walk 20 metres to the building behind me but that it was better to get in the cab. Hmm. I'm not even joking it drove 30-50 metres down the road, turned around, drove back where I had just been and into the building that was 10 metres from where I'd been originally. Oh and they charged me $3 for the pleasure. I couldn't even be bothered to be annoyed/argue about it and just decided that it was just one last rip off for the road. To be honest it was so ridiculous it was just funny.
After paying a wonderful $28 departure tax, seriously what is this? I managed to check in very early. I happily discovered that my flight from Miami to England was not with American Airlines but BA! Hurrah for no shit airlines! With all the alcohol in my bag it came to a rather heavy (for a backpack) 20kgs, that's like a third of my weight!
FYI San Jose airport is rubbish. Considering it's the main airport for Costa Rica and lot of Americans come here it's very poor. There's about 7 shops, 5 of them Britt coffee shops selling Britt gear (calm down Britt) and two cafes one of which is, you guessed it, Britt! San Jose airport sponsored by Britt Coffee. Thank god there is free wifi, I can only paint my nails so many times. Oh Adam Parratt if you read this I totally saw your Costa Rican cousin/twin. Was really creepy ha!
On the way here I said I was going to buy a litre bottle of grey goose on my way home. It's only $30!! For a litre!! And as you all know my absolute favourite vodka. To show my deduction to the sanctuary and to show you how serious I am about saving money to go back I AM NOT BUYING IT. That's right I am not being self indulgent on a product I love but instead buying myself one day with the sloths.
Flight to Miami was fine, got to watch a movie which kept me occupied, thank you Zak Efron. I was not looking forward to going through customs after the nightmare I had before so I found the next part of my trip slightly confusing!
Miami! What has happened? Is there more than one airport? Did I arrive at a different one last time or have you just changed that much in 3 months because today you were a BREEZE! Before I spent nearly 2 hours getting through immigration and customs today it took me less than an hour! Apparently it's all been remodelled (thank god!) a lot really can change in 3 months!
Ah no. The first thing I see on the way to the departure gate is grey goose. I then accidentally sit opposite it to eat some food. It's going 'buy me, buy me' with it's flashy blue top and smooth vodkary goodness. I shall not be tempted you vixen! To distract myself I instead decided to stare at Eva Longoria's new perfume ad which she has imaginatively named 'Eva'.
"Oh I love you're perfume what's it called!",
"You're wearing a person?",
"No the person who 'made' it was either too dumb or too pretentious to think of a more inventive name". Seriously come on!
May have gone to look at the grey goose. The sign for which reminded me that it is 'The worlds best tasting vodka', thanks sign! It made me feel better that it was now $33 though.
American airlines does this cool thing where they send terminally ill kids from all over the world (but mostly America) to Disney Land. They had some of the flights today and one of the areas was all decked out with balloons and they'd decorated the area and the big golf carts they use to transport people. It was pretty cool AND they gave me a cupcake. This however means that I've now had a cookie, chocolate and a cupcake in the space of 8 hours. No pudding for me with dinner! (I totally ate the pudding at dinner)
After walking twenty minutes to the other side of the airport to find coffee I boarded my flight. I had a bit of annoying couple next to me but I think I was mostly just jealous of the guy behind me who had three seats to himself...and then didn't use them!!! Seriously what a moron.
Standardly didn't sleep on the flight but just watched some films (Hysteria, Wanderlust, This Means War), thankfully there was a good choice or I might have cried.
Hour 24 and we arrived at Heathrow and I sailed through immigration and customs (also thankfully did not get fucked at US customs due to definite contraband in my bag, I also forgot I had a pen knife in my hand luggage. They're not so great at this). Nicely my dad picked me up although I was later told he was debating not doing it despite Heathrow being 20 minutes from my house. Thanks dad! So after 27 hours I am home to a cold but sunny England. Bye Central America!
