I got a bit annoyed because, as I've mentioned before, everyone keeps coming back from breaks late. It had got better but this time it was just me, Chris and Claire for an HOUR. It turns out that Judy had wanted to chat with them which is more than fair enough but at least give us a heads up or maybe don't be late every other time. I hate lateness, probably because I'm always on time and have to wait for people constantly! So by the time we got there the storm had come back and we were frantically trying to deliver food to the shaking, panicked sloths as food is a great distraction. If they have something to do they seem to chill out a bit more but its always good fun trying to get the food in when they're agitated and charging the door! I ended up doing my section and a large part of another section as well.
Someone was in a good mood today because he spent the entire day giving me kisses everywhere. Yes Gigia that was you. Glad he's feeling a bit better. Ubu was being a bit grumpy today as he's been moved away from his SFF's (sloth friends forever). Marcelo has decided that he needs another urine test and if you've been reading this you'll know how much effort I went through to get that last time. I had gone into the nursery and Geoff was giving a tour to about 8 people. He was talking about Ubu so I asked if he wanted me to get him out so they could see him and so I could see if getting him out later would be plausible. He growled at me for a bit but when he was on me he was fine. I cleaned out his cage with him on me, good as gold. Then he started peeing like a race horse. I started screaming going, "Geoff!!! Get me something!", he thought I meant to protect me so I was like, "Nooooo!!!! I need a urine sample!!!!" I couldn't find anything and knew he was going to stop soon so I whipped the towel out of the baby scales and dumped him in that. I got some urine and then a ton of gunk came out, all in front of the tourists. Then he started pooing! So I ran with him to a poo pole. He was having none of it and wanted to be picked up so I got Ursuala, who had arrived, to get me a towel and carried him, poo and all back to the nursery(luckily most of it had fallen out!) Those tourists so got a show!
At the time Claire was doing a VIP tour and I approached her saying, "want to hear something funny?" whilst carrying her scales with urine and gunk in. She said that she hoped I was going to wash it! Haha. I did the urine test and it came out negative for blood this time. But clearly something is wrong as gunk doesn't just fall out in your wee normally!
Today my poor Pippa bear had to be anaesthetised and her head shaved :( this made me very sad but one small upside was that I got to carry her when she was asleep. This was nice as I probably wouldn't be able to do this otherwise. I told Marcelo to shave the smallest amount possible and he did a very good job. The sore actually looks pretty good, apparently because I caught it so soon. Boom! Told you I was awesome at this shit! Although it was definitely part luck too. I then got to carry her back to the enclosure literally just wanting to steal her away or be able to hug her all the time. She's too cute.
I went up to give Judy money so I could see how much I would need to get out from the ATM. She said that she wanted to discuss my future plans. We had a good chat and basically she wants me back! Therefore people I'm going to need to raise at least $4000 so I can stay here for any length of time. There is no way I can raise this all on my own as well as my airfare so I'm going to need all your help and ideas to get me this much. What's even better is that it isn't even like you're funding me but actually giving it to a charity as all of it goes back into the sanctuary. According to an old newspaper it costs over $10,000 per month to run the sanctuary so mine isn't even going to cover half of one month. So yeah seriously need your help people!!!
Judy and I also talked about the Jaguar rescue centre that I was going to go to the day I leave. She's definitely put me off it, the people who run it probably have their heart in the right place but do some fucking stupid things. I'll give you two examples. Firstly they have an EAGLE, living in a cage with a sloth. Secondly they have an ocelot just living in their house, someone bought an anteater in that was injured. They left it in the house with the ocelot and it ate the anteater. They have a really high mortality rate because they just release animals when they're not ready or not able to look after themselves and they don't monitor them. Unfortunately people have started taking sloths their and they're not getting the right care. Idiots. I told everyone this and Dani who'd been there said that it didn't seem like a bad place when she went and that it seemed really good and basically got testy about what I said. I was like don't you think Judy would know more than a tourist who's just been on a guided tour? I seriously don't know why people get grumpy with me when I'm just saying what I've heard or been told.
After work I did another list for Claire/Judy of all the sloth problems for September. Definitely not as many as before but what a surprise section 2 still had the most pages! I also had to clean out Gigia's cage earlier and if you lean over him he tends to try and bite you. Just therefore got him out and held him while I did it. He's such an angel with her, we are definitely not at the picking up stage ha. She told me a really cute story about him when he was a baby though. He used to climb on a little jungle gym and carry his towel everywhere with him. One day he vanished and they spent four hours looking for him till it got dark. Judy said she was hysterical but they eventually found him shut in the cupboard under their fish tank with his towel! They therefore made him his own little cupboard for him to go and hide away in. She showed it to me and it even has little G's on either side and a special door for him to be able to shut. So cute.
And the day ended well with the girls bringing me new nutella home from Cahuita. Woop!
