Where I stayed
We all went for a big lunch as we knew we'd only be having a sandwich for dinner but it tool absolutely ages. Carlo and I eventually had to run off and buy the sandwiches for everyone but that also took ages! Everything is slow here, probably not got much hope for my camera being fixed for when I need it. By the time we got back to lunch we had about 5 minutes to stuff it down us and then rushed back so we could get changed, get water etc. The bus of course, was on time, typical!
We eventually set off after picking up torches etc, the weather did not look great. It was raining and the top of the volcano was covered in cloud which is obviously not good for us. Looks like I won't be getting my lovely sunset after all! The road we drove on was completely insane and was pretty much part of the adventure. It was not a great road and we got thrown about a lot, but it was pretty fun! We had to keep stopping to cut down bits of tree as well with the drivers handy machete. There was also some pigs that looked like reindeer as they'd had sticks tied to their heads. Apparently it's to stop them getting through fences but they still looked pretty hilarious.
'I will survive' came on the radio just as we were getting out of the car, how apt! Especially as I am probably going to fall down on the way back in the dark. I decided to adjust the song slightly by changing the words to volcano and 'for as long as I have my sandwich and water bottles'. Kept us entertained for a bit anyway.
The walk up to begin with was pretty easy and had some beautiful views. Once we started to go up though it was fairly hard. Well not for the boys, who were miles ahead of me and didn't need to stop whilst I sweate and puffed behind them. I am not good with hills, well volcanoes!
I eventually managed to reach the crater about 5 minutes after the boys and it was amazing. So much bigger than I thought it would be with loads of steam/smoke, a loud rushing noise that sounds like a plane but is apparenty pressure being released, and less nice smelly sulphuric gases. After checking it out for a bit and mucking about we trekked over to another hill. I thought this was pretty pointless and I didn't wantro walk back up again but actually it had a really good view of the volcano and a glorious sunset that I didn't think we'd get. There was another group at the crater who were on the proper overnight tour I had wanted to do but apparently they trekked for 6 hours to get here, we did it in 1.5 hours, and they were really upset to find out we were now going to go off and enjoy some coffee and biscuits. Totally picked the right tour!
While we were waiting for the sun to set a lightening storm started behind us making the whole thing so much cooler. Eventually we headed back to the crater whilst I made the guys go ahead so I could wee. I started walking back and I couldn't see them anywhere! There was no way they could have reached the crater in that time. I eventually turned around to find them sneaking up on me after persuading the guide to hide. Children!
Got to the crater and we could totally see the lava, I was so happy! Meanwhile the storm was also amazing behind us so we spent half an hour switching between looking at the lava and looking at the storm whilst Carlo and I listened to some chilled music. It was pretty damn awesome to be fair.
After we headed back in the dark which was quite difficult as it was steep and there were loads of loose stones. I nearly slide down at least twice and tripped over about 100 times, much to James amusement as he had ended up behind me. Saw a scorpion on the way back though!
Then we started the van journey back and at one point ended up being flung forward in a very comical fashion thanks to the roads. Was really fun though! I also managed to lift a whole seat off the van and was also thrown forward and James and his bag were also catapulted to the front. Definitely been an adventure!
Had a well deserved shower and decided to go out with the boys via the Bigfoot volcano boarding bus. The boys decided to mention that I am supposedly 'sexy' and I was utterly perplexed as they had just seen me look ridiculously disgusting on the top of Telica. Apparently all they saw was my boobs and bum, boys! James was also trying to convice to have a threesome with him and Carlo so they could get their England flag and me my Italian and New Zealand one! He'd also suggested it for the top of the volcano earlier which definitely would have been a great story! Was all pretty fun banter to be fair. After having a fair few drinks we headed back to Bigfoot where Carlo and I chilled on the sofa talking about sculpture (ha! And not making out, sorry James!) whilst the others did a burger run.
Today has definitely been a really fricking special day, one of the best trips I've ever done and so much fun! The boys totally made it even better as well, would not have been as fun without them!
