Where I stayed
Headed back to West Bay after having to go back for my snorkel, and then realising I'd forgotten my sarong so the boat guy, bless him, drove me on the boat to chillies so I could run in and get it! It was so hot on the beach today, I spent a great deal of time in the shade but surprise, still got burnt! I am going to miss this gorgeous water as well, at one point there was this huge shoal of about 30 palometa fish that literally circled me for ages, was so cool! Stacey joined me for a bit too so I had a bit of company for a while.
I eventually dragged myself back and went to get another bagel before my night dive as I was starving but they'd sold out! Managed to persuade her to make me a sandwich for the same price though ;) felt really crap before the dive though, think the sun had really taken it out of me as I was really shaky. I clearly needed sugar and then the doughnut lady came round and I had NO money, where's Stacey (also doing the night dive) when you need her! Played with a little land crab and chatted to all the dive master trainees for a bit before I had to watch the night dive video. I'm really going to miss people here!
The video was pretty self explanatory i.e you need to turn your flashlight on, really? Most of it was fairly obvious and wasn't really needed except for maybe completely stupid people. Speaking of, do you remember in previous blogs where I spoke about the dives with the family (Sims underwater) and the annoying couple? Guess who is on the night dive with me tonight!! YAY.
After i got in my sexy wetsuit I managed to finally get some sugar when I made Stacey buy me a coke! We got onto the boat and had a briefing and were told about the potential jellyfish situation when we surface (great....) because they apparently love light. Then the night dive. At the beginning I had a serious issue with my mask and I absolutely hate mask problems as I have to hold my nose when I'm underwater. So that was pretty horrible but after that was sorted I was fine. However everyone else was not as great, the family were a pain again. They all clumped together and were constantly taking photos and so we were always stuck behind them. What I hated about the night dive was it was so claustrophobic, everyone was so close to each and I felt I couldn't escape because I couldn't just fuck off and leave my buddy (Stacey) in case she had a problem. This is why having a dive master trainee as a partner is much better as you do have much more freedom. Managed to escape to the front at one point but that ended up being just as bad as the couple suddenly appeared on top of me and I was once again trapped in a horrendous diving sandwich of the Sims family and the annoying drifting couple.
However I did enjoy the night dive, saw two octopi, which was awesome! And we turned all the lights out at one point and swam in the phosphorous plankton and strings of pearls which I actually found super calming and I said later it was like being in space! It was cool as well because at the time there was lightening on the surface so seeing that under the water was really awesome. Although at one point this giant worm thing, like snake length, tried to attack me and I just totally ignored it! I'm so much better with stuff underwater! With the night dive I think it would definitely be better though if there were more competent people on the dive and next time I will definitely stay at the back!
Stacey said after that I was so amazingly calm and that she thought i'd make a really good divemaster! I worried I would freak out on the night dive but it seems I'm pretty good with situations (and animals) that I would usually hate on the surface. According to the DT's, instructors etc I am apparently already great at air consumption and buoyancy and I found out today that I use way less weight than a young diver usually uses so who knows! If the archaeology doesn't work out I have a potential back up!
After we got back I got the Sim's families details, might as well get some photos off them after I put up with them takin all of them on the dive. I also found out that there surname is actually 'Sims' which makes the whole Sims underwater thing even more amusing. Said goodbye to all the remaining dive masters. I wish I could stay longer, I really like everyone!
After Stacey and I rushed home and headed to the bar, Blue Channel, to watch the gymnastics all around final, which we unfortunately missed most of. Managed to get some great street food though for super cheap and had a margarita to say goodbye to Roatan :( so sad to be leaving!
