Where I stayed
This turns out to be true as it is first freezing then baking hot and the person who at first assumed was a man but sounds like a woman is sleeping with he? She? It's?? Arm behind their head which every 5 seconds keeps drifting down the rest on either my shoulder or head and once or twice they have elbowed me in the head. They keep going back into to that position and it keeps happening... It clearly isn't working change freaking positions!!
So basically this person is in my seat, taking up part of the other seat and using my head for an alternative arm rest, awesome! With about two hours to go I managed to jump ship into two empty seats where I then hypothermically slept till Flores.
The guy from the hotel offered to come pick me up which I was super grateful for as it was 6:30am and he carried my bag. Brownie points!
Headed over in the boat to San Miguel and found out that all the tourist buses stop at 10am to go to the Tikal archaeological site which I frankly think us bizarre. Apparently there are normal buses though so decided to do that and have some well deserved sleep! Got an awesome breakfast at the hotel (with some local cheese!) and headed to the bus station. I met a guy there who spoke no Spanish and was trying to ask people questions when they spoke no English. I therefore translated for him and he asked me where i'd studied Spanish! Check me out! I've clearly got good enough on my own with no teaching to sound like I know what I'm talking about-and in ten days!
Finally headed off on the bus which took FOREVER as it stops off 100 times. It was also filled with 26 people which officially beats the Cambodian record of 21, although the bus was slightly bigger. By the time I got to Tikal I only had two hours as the last bus leaves at 5 despite the fact the park closes at 6. THIS MAKES NO SENSE! No sunset for me then. 2 hours is definitely not long enough there so I literally had to run round sections and run up a ridiculous amount of stairs. My favourite things to do ever! Along the way I saw some monkeys, a toucan, realised I'd left my memory card at home, got attacked by bugs (and kindly given repellent by an American couple) and realised that I should of worn proper shoes as a) there were a gazillion orange centipede things on the floor (shudder), it was muddy and basically an actual jungle and I was in flip flops running about like some crazy white girl. Error.
The upside of going so late was that the place was empty. Although this made walking through the jungle pretty creepy it meant I had the main areas to myself most of the time which was awesome! After running up some more stairs at the gran plaza I discovered I only had 20 mins to do a 35 minute journey so I ran and just made it! Got to sit next to some nice brazilian guys on the way back so that passed the time!
Got back understandably knackered and headed to my room which I am now apparently sharing with a frog. Had an awesome dinner at the hotel and had to go back to my room to get stuff to go across to Flores. I got back to discover that the frog was now sitting on my bed looking at me. Maybe kissing all those frogs when I was 3 gave the species the wrong idea. I released it into the wild and went into the toilet, lifted the lid and bang! A frog pops out. Seriously WTF?
After the frog palavers I went across the river to get some cash and ran into the brazilians. Stalkers. Went for a drink with them, they thought it was funny I got tea, and headed back to San Miguel.
When I arrived back at my wooden bungalow I found one of those huge, hairy caterpillars-like the one from Laos and a smaller version of the one in Italy that attacked me mid-drive. Frogs, caterpillars, what next?! I got the guy next door to get it down as I wasn't going any freaking where near it bleugh.
