Where I stayed
Then the ridiculousness began. We decided to get a tuk tuk to the beach as apparently it's quite far. He told us that they were all hotel beaches and therefore private so he dropped us at the natural reserve. Great start. Luckily it turned out they apparently had a beach so we decided as we were there we might as well pay to go in. As we'd paid we decided to go an do some of the other stuff at the reserve first so we plodded off to see the waterfalls. Checked out some monkeys on the way and went across some hanging/dangerous bridges to see the waterfall. We then decided to take the long way back which was basically trekking up the mountain with no marked out paths, great! We eventually made it back to the visitor centre, so far I am not relaxed. We then headed towards the beach and checked out the butterfly area on the way.
It was an absolute mission/trek to the sodding beach and once again the path split off and there were NO signs. We headed down some steep hills thinking that down would mean lake and ended up on the main road opposite a hotel. We couldn't access the reserves beach from there so we had to trek back UP the mountain to get back onto the path. Down some more steep hills later we finally made it to the 'beach' which was basically a bit of grass and the lake. We had literally lied down for 5 minutes when two Guatemalan guys on a dingy offered to taxi us to the main public beach. We both really didn't want to have to trek back up the mountain again to get back to the visitor centre so we decided to go for it. MISTAKE. We had to wade into the water with our bags and then tow them in so we could get on as apparently, they cannot use a paddle. When on the boat (squeezed on) they couldn't get the motor to start. One of the guys (rather large) decides to stand up, almost capsizing us into, so we've heard, poisonous lake water. They still couldn't get the motor started. I therefore had to ROW four of us in a dingy to the nearest stretch of land so Georgia and I could literally jump ship.
The nearest place turned out to be someones house, wonderfully they were all in the garden watching. Once I, with Georgia's help at the end, managed to get back to this steep concrete jetty we then had to try and get out. My bag almost rolled back into the water, and thankfully one of the boat retards managed to catch it. It was super slippery but we somehow managed to get off. We then had to traipse through this poor persons garden to get back out. I think they found it pretty amusing though.
On an upside we were now on the main road again so we didn't have to trek back up the mountain, silver lining and all that. Thankfully we managed to find a tuk tuk to take us back to the hotel for less than they charged as we had no other money on us. We decided to completely sack off the beach idea today and start again tomorrow and went into town to do our errands instead.
5 hours later, 2 boat tours booked, 1 bus ticket to Flores booked and a lot of money spent on Georgia's part, we finally got back to the hotel absolutely knackered again! AND I have to get up at 7:45am tomorrow for the boat trip. Cant't wait to get on a beach and do nothing!!! So our relaxing day, as you can see, has not exactly been relaxing - at all!
