Where I stayed
We arrived Saturday at 10:00 a.m. from our night train from Kuala Lumpur. The train was pretty nice and served us 2 meals, movies, and we had a bathroom with a shower. The Hotel we stayed at was Hotel 1929 in Chinatown. We had a small room with modern furnishings and the location was good near the Outram Park MRT station that had 2 lines. We used the Subway to check out Mt. Faber/Sentosa Island, the infamous Orchard Road, Little India, and north Chinatown.
Mt. Faber was good for a view of the city, and Sentosa Island was best described as a tourist trap, except there were no tourists biting!! We enjoyed a solitary walk through a paved rainforest path, and then found the large man-made beach that was populated with many locals and a few tourists
Little India was the highlight of our day in Singapore. We ate awesome food at the hawker center. Allen had roast duck (actually Chinese) and Bryan had rojak and bee hoon mie. The pulled tea, mango lassies, and ice chendol were as good as the food. Allen bought an Indian movie called Dhoom.
Allen almost went salsa dancing in Chinatown, but he ran out of gas after a long hard day of walking. His feet were numb so it wasn't a good idea to go dancing.
We had a good time in the ethnic districts and eating the food, but we didn't come to shop (hence our about-face out of the Orchard Road area) and everything was very expensive. We were happy to be headed to Bali the next day from Singapore's world-class airport. We had some more good food there, including Singaporean kaja toast, a noodle dish, and some chicken dumplings.
